Masters Tips: A 50/1 play features in your special bets for Augusta 2024

Our Golf tipster Martin Matthews looks for some value in our Special Bets for this year's US Masters.

First round leader: Jason Day
First round leader: Scottie Scheffler
Top LIV Golfer: Patrick Reed
Top Korean: Si Woo Kim
Top 30 finish: Taylor Moore

With our main outright bets locked and loaded for this week’s Masters it’s time to turn our attention to the side markets, where, as always Paddy has priced up plenty for us to get our teeth into.

So let’s start things off by focusing on the First Round Leader.

Jason Day to be First Round Leader

First off, I’m going for Jason Day who heads out at 1.24pm local time. I sided with the Aussie in this market last year and having rewarded us with fourth place after round one I’m happy to go back in again.

Soon after Augusta last year, Day returned to the winners enclosure and has continued to play solidly in 2024. Noticeably as well for this market he currently sits 16th on tour in round one scoring with rounds of 65 at Riviera and 67 at Sawgrass in his last four Thursday efforts.

With tricky conditions forecast for the opening day at Augusta, tournament experience could be invaluable. Day has that in spades and I’m keen on him again to deliver.

Scottie Scheffler to be First Round Leader

There is a fair degree of uncertainty as to what Thursday will bring. The forecast shows the potential for windy conditions with a good chance of storms, so we can’t be certain how much play we will actually see.

From that point of view, I’ll hedge my bets and also go with Scottie Scheffler who tees off at 10.42am local time. I have shied away from Scheffler in the outright betting market this week due to the prohibitive odds. In this market though we have odds that appeal far more on an each way basis.

As we know Scheffler is by far the most likely winner this week and with eight of the past ten winners here sitting in the top four after day one, with three of them leading, if he’s to win, history tells us he will most likely start quickly.

Currently third on tour in day one scoring the Texan was third after day one on his way to victory in 2022 so this looks a great way to get him onside.

Top Liv Player – Patrick Reed

Moving on to the Top LIV Player and Patrick Reed makes plenty of appeal. The 2018 champion has excelled here since that victory, boasting a record of three top tens in five subsequent visits, and he is considered by many as a dark horse to go really well once more.

While a second Masters title may be beyond him there is no doubt he seems to be trending into form at the right time with two top tens in his last two LIV starts.

The worthy favourite in this market is Jon Rahm, however he has the burden of defending his title and is having to fully face the media scrutiny this week following his decision to change tour. Add in the fact that Brooks Koepka is struggling for form and that Tyrrell Hatton, who is bizarrely shorter odds than Reed here, has a self-confessed dislike for Augusta and Reed looks a great each way bet with three places on offer.

Top Korean Player – Si Woo Kim

Another market that catches my eye is the Top Korean Player where Si Woo Kim looks a good thing. The youngest ever Players Champion has quietly put a really strong year together, making all of his cuts to date, and only finishing outside of the top 30 twice.

Meanwhile a look at Si Woo’s Masters record shows us he has made all of his last six cuts here finishing no worse than 39th in that run. His two main opponents in this market should be Sungjae Im and Tom Kim, however, both are really searching for form at the moment with Im posting only one top 20 all season, while Kim has a similar record, and his failed to crack the top 50 on his last four starts.

That leaves Byeong-Hun An, who has been in decent nick this year, however he has gone off the boil recently and with two missed cuts in three previous Masters visits and this market is there for the taking for Si Woo.

Top 30 Finish – Taylor Moore

My final pick focuses on the Top 30 finish market and I’m siding with Taylor Moore. Moore is one of those unfashionable golfers with a ‘no frills’ really strong all round game. With no missed cuts to his name this season, and arriving on the back of a runner up finish in his last start, Moore is in fine fettle at the moment and I expect him to improve on his 39th place on debut last year.
