A competitive opener. Last year’s winner Bad Company returns off a much higher mark but he’d still be dangerous with a soft lead. STUDY THE STARS is the preferred option after making such light work of a similar task at Newbury, albeit off an 8lb lower mark. With runner-up Fast Steps armed with a 6lb pull he could prove most troublesome, along with Sophosc.

18:06 – Bailey Gate
Richard Hannon always runs a good one in the Ascot maiden in which BAILEY GATE finished second. Having raced prominently throughout that day, this drop to 5f shouldn’t be an excuse. Bonny Angel got to within 5l of the selection’s classy stablemate Trillium last time at Newbury and she’s second choice, though Tenjin and Danger Alert are also of interest.
18:36 – Desert Order
This maiden alone is worth the entrance fee. DESERT ORDER and Arrest were massive eyecatchers in hot-looking maidens, the former at the July meeting and the latter here two weeks ago. Godolphin’s colt probably achieved that bit more in his, but both look Pattern performers in the making. Not that Desert Order’s stablemate High Honour – a Frankel colt with a price tag of 900,000gns – is dismissed lightly, while Night Life must have been showing the right signs at home to be going in against the boys at a top track first time out.

19:15 – Maytree Respite
Frantastic ran in Westover’s Group 3 here in April and it will be interesting to gauge the level of confidence behind him now he goes handicapping after a three-month break. With Stevenson also a good-while absent and both fast ground and headgear firsts for Conservative, perhaps the safest plays are MAYTREE RESPITE and Cosmic Desert. Although only a neck separated them here a fortnight ago, the selection was good value for his second prize.
19:45 – Global Esteem
A tight handicap that’s likely to turn tactical. Marginal preference is for GLOBAL ESTEEM who hasn’t run badly in a couple of Ascot handicaps for this yard and he shouldn’t be far off the front end throughout. Marlay Park loves Epsom and is unraced here, but he’s feared most.
20:18 – Fulfilled
Three-year-olds have won the last four renewals of this race and FULFILLED (nap) can extend their dominance. A 3lb rise looks a small price to pay for the way he won at Newmarket. A resurgent Island Bandit may prove most troublesome, along with the very solid Crystal Casque.
