Brighton v Man City
Premier League match at the AMEX Stadium, Brighton
TV: Sky Sports Premier League/Sky Sports Main Event, Thursday, 8:00pm

The Premier League title race barrels on as Manchester City face a Thursday night jaunt down to Brighton. Fresh from booking their place in another FA Cup final, City make the trip to the AMEX looking to keep themselves on Arsenal and Liverpool’s heels in the title race, with Pep Guardiola’s side still holding the title fate in their own hands.

No Erling Haaland is a concern for City, with his injury absence stretching on and potentially harming his Premier League Golden Boot chances, whilst Brighton’s ‘answer’ to the Nordic goal slinger, Evan Ferguson, is also sidelined.

Man City to Win

I’m usually hesitant to back a big club after a huge disappointment in Europe. So in this sense, I’m grateful for City’s FA Cup semi-final win over Chelsea because that sets them on course for a double – and focuses the mind somewhat. No, it’s not the success story that last year was, but winning a double after a treble clearly puts you in an elite category.

Based on that alone, plus the four days’ rest, I’d be very confident in seeing the best possible version of Man City. Even though I’m a big believer on Brighton’s approach lending to them managing scalps rather than consistency, City are not subject to their stylistic cohesion. The only discrepancy in their last five meetings came after City had won the title last year – in a 1-1 draw.

Bernardo Silva to Score Anytime

Despite what some might think, Man City’s record in all competitions without Erling Haaland this season is actually better than when he plays. City have won 11 of the 13 games they’ve played without the Norwegian this year, while claiming victory in just two thirds of their games in which he’s appeared.

Typically, other players don’t occupy the central area like-for-like, but goals come from wide players arriving late for pull backs. Both Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva are primed for this type of tap-in, and I’ll side with the bigger price on Silva even though a move to Barcelona seems more likely every day.

Over 3.5 goals

When City need to win big games, they focus on keeping the ball and hoping for a difference maker. It’s always been their way – not to concede against teams who are tougher to score against.

But against weaker opposition who stand in the way of a trophy, it appears to be much looser: 4-1 against Villa, 4-2 against Palace, 5-1 v Luton,  and I’d expect something similar here.

Both teams to score

Brighton will have plenty of opportunity for consolation scores – whether that be worldies, set pieces, or even something as straightforward as a mental lapse.

Their 5-0 salvo over bottom feeders Sheffield United is the last time they looked functional in front of goal, but their games against bigger sides suit their chance creation methods better. Their best displays over the last three months on merit came against Spurs and Liverpool, while they failed to inspire whatsoever against Burnley, Brentford and Fulham. Go figure.

Team to Receive the Most Cards – Tie

This seems a very random to throw in, but let me explain. City will be in control of this, and Brighton have nothing to play for. They’re six points off Europe and don’t look like getting six points in total in the last month of the season – so the intensity drops off, as does the need for desperation fouls or petulance. There are no City or Brighton players in the top 33 biggest foulers in the league, so with smaller totals, the more likely a tie is.
