The Coventry first and second. The Windsor Castle winner. The Railway 1-2-3. It’s fair to say the six-runner field for the Phoenix Stakes is bursting with quality.

Yep, Saturday’s 16:15 at the Curragh promises to be a red-hot contest with the leading two-year-old over six furlongs on either side of the Irish Sea set to emerge from the pack.

Aidan O’Brien is represented by Blackbeard and Little Big Bear in his bid to saddle a record-extending 17th winner in the race, Bradsell and Persian Force make the trip over from the UK, while Apache Outlaw and Shartash complete the field.

If you’re planning to have a punt on the Phoenix Stakes then you can study the field by reading through Timeform’s handy runner-by-runner guide below. You’ll also find an early tip from the racing boffins.

Phoenix Stakes runners

Apache Outlaw

Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien Jockey: Declan McDonogh Draw: 3

Winner at Fairyhouse in June. 22/1, excellent 1¼ lengths third of 6 to Shartash in Railway Stakes at this C&D (good) 42 days ago, running on. Hard to make a case for in this company, though.

Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Seamie Heffernan Draw: 5

3 wins from 5 runs this year, posting a career best in 6-runner Prix Robert Papin at Chantilly (6f, good) 20 days ago by 3 lengths from The Antarctic. This C&D scorer needs considering.

Trainer: Archie Watson Jockey: Hollie Doyle Draw: 6

Highly promising sort who made it 2-2 in 17-runner Coventry Stakes (8/1) at Royal Ascot (6f, good to firm) 53 days ago by 1½ lengths from Persian Force. Has more to offer. Leading claims.

Little Big Bear

Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore Draw: 2

Bagged Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot before completing his hat-trick in 6-runner Anglesey Stakes at this course (6.3f, good to soft, 2/5) 21 days ago by 4¾ lengths from Yosemite Valley, forging clear. Better still to come. Player.

Persian Force

Trainer: Richard Hannon Jockey: Rossa Ryan Draw: 1

3 wins from 4 runs this year, well on top at the finish in 7-runner July Stakes at Newmarket (6f, good to firm, 1/2) 30 days ago by 1½ lengths from Show Respect. HIghly respected.

Trainer: John Patrick Murtagh Jockey: Ben Martin Coen Draw: 4

Improving sort who went 2 from 3 in 6-runner Railway Stakes at this C&D (good) 42 days ago by short head from Blackbeard. Likely to improve again. Not dismissed.

Phoenix Stakes tips

Timeform: BRADSELL is the only unbeaten runner in this Group 1 contest and Archie Watson’s impressive Coventry winner can maintain his unblemished record at the chief expense of Aidan O’Brien’s improving Little Big Bear who bids for a four-timer. Persian Force, Blackbeard and Shartash can fight it out for minor honours.
