13:40 – My Frankel

An ultra-competitive handicap where you can make a case for several, but MY FRANKEL and Ilaraab look future pattern performers in the making and look the pair to focus on. The latter did nothing but progress last season, completing a five-timer at this track on his final start, and should stay this extra two furlongs. But, My Frankel looks a typical late developer for Sir Michael Stoute, winning readily on his return at Kempton last month, beating Taqareer by one and a quarter lengths. He is expected to defy a 7 lb rise before moving up in class.

14:10 – Soldier’s Minute

This is wide open, and slight preference is for SOLDIER’S MINUTE, who can boast a solid record at this track, and won this race in 2019. That win came from a 6 lb lower mark, but Soldier’s Minute has improved since, and was in good form on the all-weather at the back end of last year. Admittedly, he was beaten by Brian The Snail when last seen in December, but Soldier’s Minute has been freshened up since, dropped down to his last winning mark, and the demands of this race will suit him well. Bielsa is another to fear now sporting first-time cheekpieces.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

14:40 – Art Power

ART POWER was a rapid improver last season, winning his first three starts, notably the Palace of Holyroodhouse Handicap at Royal Ascot, and the Lacken Stakes at Naas. He started a strong second favourite for the Nunthorpe after but found the sharp five furlongs at this track too much, never travelling well after a slow start.

Art Power performed with credit when hitting the frame in the Sprint Cup at Haydock and Champions Sprint at Ascot on his final two starts and looks the type who has even more to offer as a four-year-old. Starman seemed unsuited by soft ground in the Champions Sprint on his final outing and remains with plenty of potential.

15:10 – Noon Star

There are a couple of impeccably bred fillies to focus on here in the shape of NOON STAR and Teona. The latter opened her account in effortless style at Newcastle last year and clearly has the scope for significant improvement, but Noon Star has achieved more to date and is also open to considerable progress. Noon Star showed improved form to win a hot minor event at Wetherby last month, recording a good timefigure, and she is taken to enhance her Oaks credentials with victory in this trial.

15:40 – Northern Express

NORTHERN EXPRESS was easy to back close to the off on his reappearance at Beverley last month and he shaped as though in need of the run, plenty fresh enough early in the race and unable to quicken with the first two from the two-furlong pole. The well-backed winner clocked a good time, so it is form to be positive about, and that outing will almost certainly have put an edge on Northern Express. The unexposed Rifleman looks an obvious danger but he did unseat his rider under pressure last time and has been raised 7 lb in the weights.

16:15 – Jadhlaan

An interesting novice event in which the betting could prove informative as the ones with experience don’t set an exacting standard. JADHLAAN looks a likely sort on paper and gets the nod for the Mark Johnston team, but most of the other newcomers have something to recommend them on breeding, too. Jungle Bee shaped encouragingly on his Thirsk debut and is put forward as the chief threat.

16:50 – Flyin’ Solo

A fiercely competitive handicap to close the card. FLYIN’ SOLO opened his account in taking style at Newbury last month, relishing the stiffest test of stamina he has faced, and David Menuisier’s upwardly mobile colt is taken to follow up with this even longer trip sure to suit him really well. Both Mark of Gold and Second Slip also tackle this distance for the first time and are feared most with further improvement forthcoming.
