13:40 – Throne Hall

This is a contest full of fairly lightly raced improvers and Throne Hall also falls into that category at present. He is building himself a very enviable profile and his return victory at Doncaster was very smart indeed. He wasn’t so great last time, however, when he got himself a little bit worked up early on and was too keen to see the race out strongly. Given the galloping nature of this track, he should find a rhythm much easier and from a good stall position can just track the pace and use that long smooth stride late on.

14:10 – Magical Spirit

Magical Spirit is drawn towards the middle so we have options if the race unfolds very quickly on one particular side in the early stages. He looked so good when winning the Ayr Silver Cup last season and was given a fair hike by the handicapper. His reappearance was an excellent effort considering the ground would’ve been far too fast for his liking and with the weather forecast looking as if we’re going to get some ease in the ground he has lots in his favour. This is his second time out after a wind operation.

14:40 – Oxted

Oxted is going to go off at fairly decent odds despite having a world-class rider in the plate and a lot of things in his favour. That’s because people believe he is not as effective under softer conditions but you only have to look at his Champions Sprint form at Ascot to blow that theory out of the water. That run was also off an absence where he would’ve won had he been able to have a prep contest. Ryan Moore knows him well after an initial experience on him last time.

Ghaiyyath William Buick York

15:10 – Teona

The dogs have been barking up and down Newmarket High Street for some time regarding Teona for the Varian stable and she has been a bit of a plunge horse as far as the Oaks is concerned at Epsom. With the team looking to hold strong chances in both classics in early June, she will want to rubber-stamp her credentials on this occasion. Noon Star’s Wetherby form looks strong already having being boosted in the Lingfield Oaks trial and she looks the main opposition.

15:40 – Rifleman

Although in time this trip may prove a little on the sharp side for Rifleman, he still should have the required ammunition to get the job done. He was definitely making a threat to the runaway winner at Sandown when swerving badly left-handed and dumping his rider on the turf. They don’t want to risk Ryan Moore having another tumble with such good racing coming up but it can prove just a blip in his career and with the blinkers on for the first time, Kieran O’Neill can steer him home to a well-earned success.

Jason Weaver’s York Dante Festival tips:

13:40 – Throne Hall
14:10 – Magical Spirit
14:40 – Oxted
15:10 – Teona
15:40 – Rifleman
