Allan Byrne: 12:30 Newcastle – Dubai Angel
He looks very interesting on his debut for Dr. Newland. He only had two chase runs for Ruth Jefferson three years ago and its noteworthy that the good Dr. decides to send Dubai Angel chasing around a track where he has won and been second twice from three runs.
Ryan McCue: 12.20 Haydock – Cornerstone Lad
I’d be disappointed if Cornerstone Lad wasn’t good enough to make a winning chase debut. He’s clear of these on ratings and the way he jumps hurdles it would give you plenty of optimism that he will be as good over fences. There doesn’t look to be a proper danger in this and he should win.
Jamie Smyth: 13.50 Ascot – Bennys King
This race will suit much better than the Aintree contest last time and he looks to have rock solid each-way claims with Paddy paying 4 places. He came on significantly from his first run last season and can be expected to do the same this time with his solid course form on similar ground a further positive. The yard continues in really good nick and it would be disappointing if he doesn’t go extremely close to adding to their winners’ tally.
Frank Hickey: Haydock 14.40 – Sojourn
It was difficult not be really impressed with Sojourn on his seasonal reappearance at Carlisle on testing ground when he routed a decent field. There were 15 lengths back to the second and another 24 lengths back to the third. The form has worked out, with the third and sixth winning next time out and even Late Romantic who was pulled up won his next start also.
Sojourn went up 11lbs for that win but he relishes testing ground and is a strong stayer and nowhere do you get conditions that would suit more than at Haydock.
He looks sure to run a big race.
Niall O’ Reilly: 15:35 Ascot – Time Flies By
Time Flies By looks potentially very well treated and if his jumping holds up, he looks sure to go close. He had some useful form to his name in bumpers, prior to disappointing in a few novice hurdles last year, though its not hard to find excuses for those runs. He shaped well on return at Ascot recently, where he was far too keen though still ran well. This drop down to 2 miles on heavy ground with a strong pace guaranteed looks sure to suit.
There’s a chance he could make a mockery of his current mark.
Lorcan O’ Rourke: 16.00 Wolverhampton – Pink Jazz
This selection went straight into the notebook after its first run for Sean Curran in March after a very interesting ride. Since then he has been tried in all sorts of conditions without his mark budging. Last week the penny finally dropped over a slightly longer trip at this course, having had first time blinkers and tongue tie applied.
Now with the same headgear applied and just 4lbs higher than that eye- catching run in March, Pink Jazz can follow up last week’s win over the same course and distance he won over for previous trainer Gordon Elliot in January.
