Grand National favourites: Paddy Power’s leading contenders for today’s Aintree race

Will the betting point us in the right direction?

The Grand National is fast approaching and the line-up has been assembled for Aintree – but who is the favourite?

Corach Rambler justified his position at the head of Paddy Power’s betting for the world’s greatest steeplechase by scoring at odds of 8/1 last year and connections are hoping to join the likes of Red Rum and Tiger Roll in the exclusive club of back-to-back winners on Saturday, April 13.

Despite the field size being reduced to 34 runners for this season’s renewal, a whole host of rivals old and new are bidding to steal the crown and take their place in the history books.

Corach Rambler

Corach Rambler is one of the favourites with Paddy Power for the Grand National as last year’s winner bids to repeat the feat.

Lucinda Russell’s stable star moved clear at the head of our betting after an impressive third place in the Cheltenham Gold Cup after 111 days off the track. Does that run prove he is well handicapped or will it have left its mark? Only time will tell!

I Am Maximus

I Am Maximus, trained by Willie Mullins, is one of the few Grand National winners in the likely line-up after bagging the Irish version in testing conditions at Fairyhouse in 2023.

That was his first win over fences and he made the most of that experience to land the Grade 1 Drinmore Novice Chase in the early months of this season before beating Vanillier in the Grade 3 Bobbyjo Chase in February.

Limerick Lace

JP McManus’ main jockey Mark Walsh has opted to ride Limerick Lace, who heads to Aintree off the back of a win in the Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Chase at last month’s Cheltenham Festival.

The Grand National represents a trip into the unknown in terms of distance for the seven-year-old but she only has to carry a featherweight of 10st 8lbs.

Panda Boy

The Grand National has been the target for Panda Boy since a fifth-place finish in last season’s Irish equivalent behind I Am Maximus.

An encouraging second place in the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown over Christmas showed that he’s on the right track for trainer Martin Brassil, who saddled Numbersixvalverde to Grand National success in 2006.

Mahler Mission

Mahler Mission is bidding to defy the trends by overcoming a lengthy layoff to win the Grand National.

A prominent runner, John McConnell’s stable star was on track to scoop the National Hunt Chase at last year’s Cheltenham Festival before a late fall and delivered a career-best effort to place second in this season’s Coral Trophy – a key trial for this.

Vanillier

Vanillier is bidding to go one better in this year’s Grand National after staying on to finish second in last season’s edition.

Gavin Cromwell’s leading contender, the winner of the 2021 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, has been given a chance by the BHA handicapper as he is only 4lbs higher in the ratings compared to 12 months ago.

Meetingofthewaters

Willie Mullins’ other big hope stamped his credentials as an Aintree prospect with a facile success in the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown during the Christmas period.

Meetingofthewaters is now 17lbs higher in the handicap for that victory but is set to carry a featherweight and placed third off that mark in last month’s Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
