Lille v Aston Villa
Europa Conference League match at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, Lille
TV: TNT Sports, Thursday, 5:45pm

Both Teams to Score

Europa Conference League favourites Aston Villa put in an outstanding display against Arsenal over the weekend in a game that might well have ended the Gunners’ title dreams. They’ve been in great goal-scoring form of late, netting 10 over their last five, seven over their last five on their travels, and have also scored 12 over their last five away Conference League games.

Lille are no pushover though, they’ve only lost two of their last 10 fixtures while on home soil are unbeaten over their last 15, winning six and drawing two of their last eight, scoring 11 over their last five played there. Both Teams to Score should certainly be landing with both teams in strong goal-scoring form.

A Goal Scored in Both Halves

Four of Lille’s last five games have seen at least one first-half goal and four also saw at least one second-half goal. For Aston Villa, three of their last five on the road have seen at least one goal scored in the first 45 minutes of play and four saw second-half goals.

The onus will, of course, be on Lille to strike early here to get back into the tie, and with Villa scoring four goals over those five games after the 75-minute mark, we should see at least one goal scored per half.

Jonathan David to have 2 or more Shots on Target

Canada’s Jonathan David was a bit of a disappointment last week against Villa, although he did have one shot on target over the 90 minutes. The hosts have had plenty of time to prepare for this match as they weren’t in Ligue Un action over the weekend and has scored five goals over his last five at home.

Sitting at the top of Lille’s attack, and being their top scorer by a good distance, we can see him creating a few problems for Villa’s central defenders on Thursday night.

Ollie Watkins to Score

As threatening as David is, his Villa counterpart, Ollie Watkins has found some great form at the perfect moment of the season. The England striker has bagged four goals since returning from injury over his last three games. With 19 Premier League goals this season, as well as four in seven in Europe, we’re getting some decent odds here for him to find the back of the net.

Aston Villa to Qualify for the Next Round

On paper, Unai Emery’s side are the stronger one. However, Lille’s home form is tough to argue with. As mentioned above, they’ve had a full week to prepare while Villa put in a defensive masterclass against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal on Sunday last.

The result is tough to call and should Villa score first then they’ll drop back and allow Lille at them but, at the same time, should Lille score first, Villa have shown time and again this season that they can shut out teams and indeed have only conceded two or more goals on the road in just eight of their 24 away games this campaign. We’re backing Villa to advance to the semifinals where they’ll be facing either Olympiacos or Fenerbahce.
