Huddersfield v Swansea City – Under 2.5 goals

EFL Championship match at John Smith’s Stadium – 3pm kickoff

Huddersfield were moments away from heading into their final three games outside of the relegation zone but a harsh penalty call against Bristol City last weekend turned a 1-0 win into a 1-1 draw, leaving them in the bottom three. Swansea are all but safe following back-to-back wins, so it is all on Huddersfield here.

The value on three points is massive, especially with rivals Birmingham tipped to win away at Rotherham. In addition to that, Huddersfield host Birmingham next week and winning this game would at least keep them within touching distance. All-in-all, it is set to be a tense afternoon at John Smith’s Stadium.

Only once in 12 games has Huddersfield scored more than one goal, and they’re the team who need the result. Swansea might be entering ‘beach mode’ and wouldn’t be too unhappy to take a draw, which would officially confirm their survival. Games with something on them at this time of the season tend to be cagier.

Rotherham v Birmingham City – Birmingham to win by exactly one goal

Birmingham City travel to already relegated Rotherham looking to at the very least keep their survival prospects in their own hands entering the final two games. With others around them also having realistic winning opportunities this weekend, it is key for Birmingham to get the job done in their own winnable encounter. It still has the potential to be a major banana skin for The Blues and getting the result trumps above the desire to play well.

This is likely to be anything but convincing for a Birmingham side that has won only three Championship away matches all season. However, for all they’ve struggled on their travels, they’ve always been competitive and rarely heavily beaten. All three away wins have come against clubs positioned mid-table and below, including two by a one-goal margin.

To Rotherham’s credit, they have shown some pride in recent performances as relegation was confirmed. They’ve failed to score in eight of their previous nine, but the last four have been closer in terms of score line. Perhaps most telling is that from their ten home defeats, eight has been by a one-goal margin.

Stoke v Plymouth – Both teams to score

This clash has plenty of discussion points around it, most notably the fact both are involved in the relegation scrap. A win confirms Plymouth’s survival and the pressure is slightly taken off them following an unexpected victory over Leicester last time out. Hosts Stoke will of course play to win.

The issue for both teams is that neither are necessarily too reliable in terms of keeping a clean sheet. Whilst Plymouth have kept two in their last three, one was against rock-bottom Rotherham and it was something of a miracle that Leicester didn’t score a few goals, let alone zero! Stoke have kept only three clean sheets in their previous 16 and have scored in ten of 11 league meeting against clubs positioned 18th or lower.

Also, Plymouth have a strong record vs those below them in the league table; losing only twice in 11 and only failing to score on two occasions. Whilst this is a game that should be full of tension, both teams are in decent form, so it should still be open and end-to-end.

Sunderland v Millwall – Under 2.5 goals

Mid-table Sunderland have recently found some life, despite ultimately having nothing to play for, by claiming four points in back-to-back away games at Leeds and West Brom. They’ve also rediscovered the art of defending with five clean sheets across their last six games. This is made all the more impressive as they kept only one in 12 before that.

They’ll have to dig deep into their own professional pride to get up for this clash with Millwall. Getting up for Leeds and West Brom is one thing, but bottom-half Millwall is another; a Millwall side who took giants strides towards survival in recent wins over Leicester and Cardiff. Those were home victories however and Neil Harris’ side have netted over 1.5 goals in only five away trips all season.

With the pressure mostly off Millwall here and nothing really on it for Sunderland, apart from trying to improve their home record, this could have a bit of an end of season feel to it.
