ITV Saturday gets under way here with a handicap over 1m4f. GUSTAV HOLST has not won in nine starts so you might wonder what ‘planet’ I am on (for those who know his music) tipping him up here, but he might just have an each-way squeak for Richard Hannon and James Doyle. He could go from the front in this field, and a second place at Windsor racecourse off the same mark of 75 suggests an upset isn’t impossible.
ITV are also at Goodwood Saturday for this handicap over 7f. Not many of these are probably strong stayers at this trip but the exception should be EVOCATIVE SPARK for George Boughey and Callum Shepherd. My hope has run his last two races over nearly a mile at the stiff Beverley track and he might have more to offer. Outside draw is not ideal.
Now a handicap over 2m. JUST HUBERT was third in this race last year at a big price and it’s not impossible he can hit the frame again at least for the Grassick/Muir combination. My selection is off exactly the same mark as 12 months ago and had a pipe opener at Ascot the other day which should’ve blown away the cobwebs. Nicola Currie takes the ride.
Now a Listed race over 1m2f for older horses. STORMY ANTARTIC won this last year when the ground was soft but he might get away with this surface once again for Ed Walker and the excellent Richard Kingscote. My hope has always had a bit of class and there should be a strong gallop here for him to run at. Might be an eachway price as well. Fitness has to be taken on trust.
Another tough handicap here in the Silver Bowl over a mile. MIGHTY ULYSSES will have to be a Group horse to win this off 101 but his success at Newmarket last time suggests he’s very useful and the chances are he’ll just be too good for this field. The lightly raced son of Ulysses gets crack apprentice Benoit de La Sayette taking off 5lb for the Gosdens and that looks a canny move.
ITV also go to York for this handicap over 5f. A wide open event. I tipped up JAWWAAL the other day at York and he travelled like a machine before fading tamely. He’s been dropped 1lb for that but more importantly if he’s in the mood he’s got great eachway claims for Michael Dods and Connor Beasley. Have to hope stall 1 is good.

This is the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes over 6f for three-year-olds. El Caballo has been superb on the all-weather but I see no reason to oppose GO BEARS GO. The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint runner-up returned with a fine win at Ascot and can just sit off a strong gallop and pounce late for David Loughnane and Rossa Ryan.
If it’s Group 1 Classic action you want then ITV bring you the Irish 2000 Guineas now over 1m. This won’t take long! It really should be at the mercy of Charlie Appleby’s champion juvenile NATIVE TRAIL after his Craven success and fine second to stable companion Coroebus in the Newmarket equivalent.

Here is a Group 3 fillies’ stakes event for older horses over 1m6f. I’m not sure many of these are worth of their rating. Decent hurdler MIGHTY BLUE might be good enough for Joseph O’Brien but I wouldn’t want to risk too much on that. The mare was a fare third on her comeback this season at Gowran Park and has every chance on ratings.
The feature of the day in the Group 2 Temple Stakes over 5f. You can’t totally rely on WINTER POWER to produce her best or anything near her mark of 117. But the truth is if she does she will smash this lot up for Tim Easterby and David Allan. The Nunthorpe heroine can show blistering pace and if on her A game will blast away from the field.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
