What a start to the day at Naas this Sunday with a host of talent on display for this opening Grade 3 Novice Chase. Run Wild Fred and Vanillier meet again after finishing between Fury Road at Leopardstown over Christmas with Gordon Elliott also saddling Farouk D’alene following his narrow defeat at Limerick. It’s a race which should provide more clues and clarity ahead of the Cheltenham Festival with STATTLER getting the verdict to score on just his second start over fences.
The son of Stowaway ran well in several staying races over hurdles at the highest-level last season and looks the type to progress even further over fences. He made the perfect start to chasing with victory at Fairyhouse last month where he travelled and jumped well in impressive fashion. The mount of Paul Townend can get a nice toe into this race with Vanillier, Run Wild Fred and stable-mate En Beton likely to race forward.
SLIGE DALA is a horse I’ve followed on several occasions in the past and I’m hoping he can show more here and challenge for victory in this extended 2m 4f Handicap Chase. The son of Sholokhov is a winner of two bumpers and a maiden hurdle and is now having only his fourth start over fences. Joseph O’Brien’s stable are in good form at present and this horse can improve off a rating of 120 on his handicap debut with stable-mate Fakir and Philip Fenton’s Carrolls Cottage the main dangers.
It’s hard to know how good SAINT FELICIEN could be going forward for the Robcour team but this looks a good opportunity against a field who have lost their way in recent times. The son of Saint Des Saints didn’t come out of third gear on his Irish debut at Gowran Park and it’s great to see Robbie Power back in the saddle after injury. He might be a type to skip Cheltenham and wait for Fairyhouse or Punchestown before developing into a nice contender for some of the big 2-mile races next year.
CHAMPION GREEN can finally get off the mark over hurdles for Joseph O’Brien and JP McManus in the opening division of this maiden hurdle. It could be argued the son of The Gurka was a little unlucky when slightly hampered and squeezed for room when Doctor Churchill got first run on him heading towards the last hurdle when finishing second at Limerick over Christmas.
It didn’t go according to plan either at Punchestown when the saddle slipped on Mark Walsh and he lost his irons before pulling up early. He should settle better and score with a tongue-tie fitted while any market support for any of the Gavin Cromwell runners warrants plenty of respect. Ballinrobe flat winner Only Sky is another on the shortlist and could challenge for the Jessica Harrington team.
EVERGREEN AND RED can score on his hurdles debut for Noel Meade having previously shown good experience on the flat last year. The son of Requinto landed a nice gamble when winning at Punchestown last September and will certainly know his job having been schooled well at Tu Va Stables. The four-year-old is a half-brother to Lady Shanawell, a two-time hurdle winner and he can take this race with Faron and Global Export looking his biggest challengers.
This closing bumper has been won by some nice horses over the years with Our Vinnie, Killultagh Vic, Tombstone, The Big Dog and Latest Exhibition all previous winners. Seabank Bistro races for Willie Mullins on debut and surprisingly enough comes from the family of Killultagh Vic with Patrick Mullins in the saddle.
SANTONTIO has shown more than enough on his two career starts to win for Gordon Elliott and Jamie Codd. The son of Coastal Path was second on debut at Fairyhouse to The Nice Guy, a subsequent winner who has enhanced the form and races over hurdles earlier on the card. He went down by a nose over Christmas to Embassy Gardens and deserves to get the head in-front today.
