Goodwood results: Friday as it happened at Glorious Goodwood on day 4

Day 4 was all about brilliant Battaash.

Jim Crowley after riding Battaash in King George Stakes

Glorious Goodwood 2020 is almost over but the beast Battaash lived up to his high billing with a thrilling display in the King George Stakes on day four.

He crushed the previous race record by over half a second to add another prestigious win to his glittering CV.

So, join us as we reminisce about another brilliant day at a roasting-hot Goodwood.

13.10 TDN Australia Handicap 1m3f (1.10pm) – Cepheus

Cepheus went early and kicked with authority, flying down the outside of the pack, out-sprinting his rivals and hitting the front with a couple of furlongs to go. Moomba went closest to reeling him in but the winner still had around half a length in hand over the line. Berkshire Savvy was third and the SP fav Al Qaqaa finished fourth.

13.45 Saint Clair Oak Tree Stakes 7f (1.45pm) – One Master

Tom Marquand and One Master left is as late as possible to reward favourite backers with a scintillating charge at the death, taking it by a nose. Breathtaking Look led most of the way but faded to fourth when the taps were turned on and One Master, Valeria Messalina and Althiqa charged forward to finish in that order.

14.15 Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes 1m (2.15pm) – Tilsit

Tilsit upset the big favourite Khaloosy with an unstoppable, albeit controversial, charge inside the final couple of furlongs. Ryan Moore’s mount cut across second-placed My Oberon, forcing him to clatter the rails before correcting after the fact. Khaloosy certainly didn’t live up to the hype and finished a fair way back in third. A steward’s enquiry ruled that the final result would stand but Ryan Moore was later banned for 5 days.

14.45 Unibet Golden Mile Handicap 1m (2.45pm) – Prompting

Prompting continued on his upward trajectory with a powerful finish in the Golden Mile Handicap. He looked a bit boxed in but forced his way out with two to go and took control of the race in the final furlong, winning by a length and a half. The hotly tipped Sir Busker didn’t get a run and Urban Icon, Afaak and Willie John were the next three home from Prompting.

Battaash Goodwood

15.15 King George Qatar Stakes 5f (3.15pm) – Battaash

Battaash smashed this race to pieces, setting a new King George Stakes record time by more than half a second. The rest were purely window dressing as all eyes were on Battaash. Glass Slippers was second but Ornate landed a very handy 100/1 third. However it was all about the champion who put in perhaps his best performance to date.

15.45 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Glorious Stakes 1m4f (3.45pm) – Pablo Escobarr

Tom Marquand racked up another Glorious Goodwood win, this time on Pablo Escobarr, by around a length from Desert Encounter who left it too late. The winner was staying on well and was never in doubt of glory from a furlong out, though. Le Don De Vie picked up third.

16.20 New Unibet Instant Roulette Nursery Handicap 6f (4.20pm) – Zamaani

Zamaani got out in front and threatened to fall away with a couple of furlongs to go but a switch to the inside rail seemed to gee him up and after a bit of encouragement from Will Buick. Perotto was hard done by with Zamaani’s change of lane but got on well for second ahead of Thank You Next in third.

16.55 British European Breeders Fund EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes 6f (4.55pm) – Ventura Diamond

Ventura Diamond outstayed Sarsaparilla as the duo battled it out up the hill inside the final two. Oisin Murphy’s mount stuck at it and pulled away from the Gosden horse to win by over a length with Sarsaparilla fading just into third behind Illykato with Meu Amor in fourth.
