We’re almost under starters orders with Glorious Goodwood less than a fortnight away – and Paddy’s top traders have priced up antepost betting markets for the biggest renewals.
Three of the races at this year’s meeting form part of the British Champions Series so to whet the appetite we’ve taken a look at the antepost odds for those contests.
The stayers take centre stage on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood although the dream rematch between Subjectivist and Stradivarius is off the cards after the 2021 Gold Cup winner sustained filling in a leg.
Stradivarius was attempting to make it four wins on the spin at Royal Ascot but found Subjectivist too hot to handle. However, the Mark Johnston-trained four-year-old may never be seen on track again due to his heartbreaking injury.
Seven-year-old Stradivarius (4/6) is the odds-on favourite with Paddy Power to notch a five successive win in the Goodwood Cup Stakes, which is run over 2m – 4f shorter than the Gold Cup.
Spanish Mission (4/1), Trueshan (6/1) and Santiago (10/1) are also prominent in our early betting.
Probably the most exciting renewal of the whole week, the Sussex Stakes pits Palace Pier (11/10) against Poetic Flare (7/4) in a generational battle of the one milers.
Palace Pier won the St James’s Palace Stakes in 2020 and is unbeaten as a four-year-old while this year’s 2000 Guineas winner Poetic Flare followed in his rival’s hooves by winning at Royal Ascot.
The elder horse is the slight favourite with Paddy Power – but our top trader Frank Hickey believes the younger contender has the edge.
“Poetic Flare’s a massive threat to Palace Pier and I fancy him to turn him over,” Frank told us.
A quality group of fillies and mares hold entries including Snowfall, Snow Lantern, Joan Of Arc, Love and Santa Barbara. Quite frankly, there’s too many to list.
As a result, Paddy Power’s antepost betting market is wide open with Audarya (7/2) and Snowfall (7/2) vying for favouritism at 7/2 while nine more horses have single-digit prices.
Run over 1m 2f, the Nassau Stakes is worth a cool £340,260 to winning connections.
It’s the feature race on day three of the meeting and five of the last six renewals have been won by three-year-olds so that’s certainly a trend to note.
