One mile superstars Poetic Flare and Palace Pier could clash for the first time in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on Wednesday July 28.
The two colts won Group 1 contests at Royal Ascot last week but Paddy Power trader Frank Hickey fancies 2000 Guineas winner Poetic Flare to come out on top if they finally meet at Goodwood.
The Sussex Stakes will be a good race and I’ll be siding with Jim Bolger’s colt over Palace Pier.
Palace Pier didn’t impress me at all in the Queen Anne Stakes and he’s not the type of horse that blows you away with the way he wins. I call him a staying miler. He grinds out wins instead of pushing the acceleration button.
Poetic Flare was unbelievable in the St James’s Palace Stakes. He was brilliant. I really thought the fact it was his fifth run of the season would tell but it didn’t at all and he was mightily impressive.
Poetic Flare’s a massive threat to Palace Pier and I fancy him to turn him over.
I’d be surprised if St Mark’s Basilica goes in the Sussex Stakes.
You’d imagine 10 furlongs would be more suitable for him. I don’t know whether he’ll stay a mile-and-a-half but the fact he’s won at 10 furlongs in France they must be looking at the Arc as the long-term plan. It wouldn’t make sense to drop him back to a mile.
The rest of the potential runners in Paddy Power’s antepost market are priced from 10/1 to 66/1.
*Odds quoted on the widget are Future Racing/Antepost prices which means that if your selection does not run in the race for whatever reason, you will lose your stake under traditional antepost rules
