Arsenal and West Ham feels like the kind of intermediate London derby we’ve been waiting for now for a long time. The Spurs stuff got kind of tedious because of the banter merchants online, whereas Arsenal’s slow decline back into mediocrity and West Ham’s ascent to slightly above that sphere gives this mid-season game quite an important feel to it.

The Gunners won’t like hearing that of course, and while West Ham’s image is greatly growing, perhaps Arsenal are now their primary focus as one of the teams they’ll be battling in a group outsiders-looking-in on the top four in the short-term future.

There’s two points between these two and they have the exact same goal: highly achievable too at the midway point of the season. And once more, there’s something nice about a rivalry having a local bite to it rather than being solely about success. Dare I call this a throwback to the 90s? The way some haircuts are going, I don’t think it’s too outlandish a call to make, folks.

West Ham To Win

I’ll explain more as I go, but as of right now, they’re a more coherent unit. The Hammers are a touch more consistent. On the flip side, there are genuine flashes of the old, pathetic Arsenal in this year’s showings – even if their points tally is slightly more respectable.

It’s been quite a turbulent week for The Gunners, while West Ham have been able to tee this up as a giant killing and Arsenal’s focus has been elsewhere. They’re probably also not fully getting the benefit of playing a big-named side because West Ham haven’t quite earned it yet. Leicester seemingly got that every week until their title was confirmed. Sport is 95% psychological. Rinse, repeat.

Over 2.5 Goals

In games where West Ham play semi-functional sides, there tends to be lots of goals. Their 4-1 battering of Leicester was chaotic. Their game with Man United hit the overs. They shared five goals with Liverpool, and they did the same against Chelsea. Generally speaking, Moyes does not shy away from attacking big sides – which is reminiscent of his Everton days and bloody lovely to see if I do say so myself.

Alexander Lacazette To Have 4 Or More Shots

Here’s the subtext – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been stripped of the Arsenal captaincy and is out of the side to play here. It feels like Auba’s more prolific profile has often overshadowed Lacazette, and now feels like his time to shine. Expect him to try and lead by example by shooting on sight.

Over 3.5 Cards

These two will be bitey, but moreso than that, the suggestions that there’s a discipline problem at Arsenal may well rear its head in this. It would be the perfect follow-up to the Aubameyang story of course, and you know that these things generally come one after the other.
