PL treble Wednesday

* Burnley v Watford has now been postponed due to Covid-19.

The following are a list of things, although unexpected, have the ability to change your mood considerably. The first is when on your day to cook the dinner, your better half suggested a chippy tea instead.

The second is when you do that quick triple tap – wallet, keys, phone – and for a brief second your whole life flashes before you as you can’t find your phone. Only for a few seconds later when you realise it’s in your back pocket and all is right with the world again.

The third? Midweek Premier League fixtures. They’re an absolute marvel and we should all be eternally grateful. But, of course, football has a chance to ruin your day as much as make it. However, a winner softens every blow and makes every occasion that bit sweeter.

19:30 Brighton v Wolves: Both Teams to Score

Hilariously, the only teams to have scored fewer goals than Brighton this year are Wolves and Norwich. So, you may wonder just why I’m punting both teams to score here. Well, that much is simple. Up until now, these sides’ defensive records have been far above expected levels, while their attacking output has been severely under-represented.

I always joke that Wolves, for their attacking efforts, would be top four in any other season – and there comes a point where that xG tally needs to swing. Does it help with Raul Jimenez being suspended? No, but he’s been in the side plenty when they’re struggling to convert, so it makes some sense that if a change in approach is going to provide dividends, it could be now.

19:30 Burnley v Watford: Burnley To Win

I’m approaching my favourite punting time of the year now. It’s when the season is about the midway point and begins to revert to type. So, depending on Arsenal’s start – they’ll now display the exact inverse. Liverpool will complain about the festive period’s scheduling and above all else, Burnley will go on a run in spite of their seemingly doomed previous Premier League exploits.

The home form of The Clarets has been abysmal so far and that can’t continue. Watford are the ideal partners for this upturn in form because they’ve not drawn away from home yet. They play wide open and that’s exactly what Burnley need as they continue to struggle when the focus is solely on Chris Wood producing in flashes.

19:30 Crystal Palace v Southampton: Palace To Win To Nil

The following are the sides who have conceded fewer home goals than Palace this season: Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea. The following are the sides who have conceded more away goals than Southampton so far this season: Norwich.

It’s a simple enough equation, and until Southampton can show any form a balance between defensive cohesion and creating chances, they are in big trouble. It’s not even just their defensive record on the road, only Norwich and Newcastle have scored fewer goals per game away from home than them. Southampton away from home? No use.
