The wheels unexpectedly came off England’s chariot in the first half of their Six Nations game with Italy this afternoon as the Italians benefited from one of the most bizarre tries you’re likely to see.
Italy utterly bamboozled England in the opening period with their defensive tactics, by not committing players to the ruck and thus getting rid of the offside line at the breakdown.
This helped the visitors to a shock 10-5 half time advantage.
Prop Dan Cole gave England the lead in the 23rd minute of game after going over at the back of a maul, that try was answered by a penalty from Tommaso Allan nine minutes later to put Italy on the score board at 5-3.
With seconds to go in the half Italy had another Allan penalty to give them a surprise lead at the break, but they were to get so much more as the ball cannoned back off the post. England’s defence were caught sleeping and that let winger Giovanbattista Venditti burst onto the ball to slam it over the line.

Unfortunately for Italy, despite an initiative game plan and a boat load of effort they just couldn’t keep the might of England at bay in the end and the home side ran out 36-15 winners with a bonus point to boot.
