It’s impossible to think of the Olympics without athletics yet we we sit through the first week starved of track and field action.

Well, that’s all about to change as the sport sprints into view with more than a week of top-quality competition from the Japan National Stadium set to get underway.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

The Olympics athletics schedule for Tokyo 2020 takes place between Friday July 30 and Sunday August 8 so let’s take a hop, skip and a jump into the dates for all the events.

We’ve rounded up all the information you need to know including our three best bets.

Olympics Athletics Tips

Our writer Joe Short is on hand with his top tips for the track and field action including a medal hope for Team GB…

Men’s 100m – Trayvon Bromell

Bromell has competition from South Africa’s Akani Simbine and compatriot Ronnie Baker. Andre De Graase and Yohan Blake are also floating around the odds. But Bromell ran 9.80 in his US Olympic trials back in June and should shave off more time in Tokyo. He’s no Bolt, but right now he’s probably unstoppable.

Women’s 100m and 200m – Dina Asher Smith

She has two shots at winning a minimum bronze, and could well push for silver in the 100m. A gold may be a stretch too far.

Men’s 400m Hurdles – Karsten Warholm

Having cracked a 29-year-old world record this summer, Warholm heads to Tokyo in the form of his life. America’s Rai Benjamin is realistically the only man who can stop the Norwegian grabbing gold here. The rest are battling for bronze.
