13:30 – BALON D’OR

Backing horses with wide draws at Chester does come with risks attached, but BALON D’OR appeals as the most talented runner in this field, and may be good enough to get away with it. He knew his job when making a winning debut at Musselburgh last month, and that form is working out particularly well, so there is plenty to like, aside from stall 11. At the prices, he is worth chancing ahead of Middleham Park duo Ziggy’s Phoenix and Ziggy’s Dream.

14:05 – JER BATT

JER BATT is another who hasn’t been gifted a good draw but from a handicapping perspective he is hard to oppose. He has shown much improved form since joining this yard, winning two of his three starts, and it was hard not to be impressed by the manner of his victory at Musselburgh 10 days ago. He put that contest to bed from some way out, edging ahead from halfway and continuing to pour it on in the closing stages. Jer Batt escapes a penalty for that success and with Billy Loughnane again taking 3 lb off he should be hard to beat granted a clear run. Democracy Dilemma, who is a course and distance winner, makes most appeal of the remainder.

14:40 – SAVETHELASTDANCE

SAVETHELASTDANCE has a smart pedigree but shaped as if in need of the experience on her debut in a back-end maiden at Thurles last year. She was the least fancied of the Ballydoyle trio on her return at Leopardstown last month, but she proved easily the best, relishing the step up in trip and scoring in the style of a smart filly. She brings bundles of potential to the table now stepping up in class and she should be hard to beat representing a yard that has an excellent record in this race. Luckin Brew will be a danger provided she sees out the longer trip, and Sirona is one of several others who can’t be completely dismissed.

15:15 – ARREST

ARREST was a most progressive juvenile last season, scoring twice over a mile before finishing a head second to Dubai Mile (Adelaide River six lengths back in third) in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud on his final start. He promises to do even better this season, particularly now stepping up to a mile and a half, and he is the one that they all have to beat. Hadrianus shaped well behind another good prospect from the Gosden stable on his recent reappearance and may provide a bigger threat to the selection than Aidan O’Brien’s Adelaide River.

15:45 – ROYAL DRESS

ROYAL DRESS bumped into a promising filly at Doncaster on her final start last season and improved further to open her account in heavy ground at the same course on her return to action last month. She was well fancied to do so and she got the job done with the minimum of fuss, going with plenty of enthusiasm, and he useful pedigree points to her doing even better now handicapping from what appears to be a fair mark. Kessaar Power is likely to go well also as he bids to make it three from three for new trainer Kevin Philippart de Foy.

16:20 – SHADOW DANCE

There are plenty of potential improvers in this maiden but SHADOW DANCE very much caught the eye on his debut at Windsor last month and makes the most appeal. He showed plenty of potential to split a pair who had already shown promise, produced to challenge a furlong from home but he was always being held in the final 100 yards. There should be plenty of improvement in him now and he has a good draw to work from. Vaguely Royal and Amleto are feared most in a race which should throw up plenty of future winners.

16:55 – PAWS FOR THOUGHT

PAWS FOR THOUGHT makes plenty of appeal off a mark 3 lb lower than when caught in the shadow of the post in this race 12 months ago. The five-year-old signed off last season with a creditable effort in first-time cheekpieces (retained) at Catterick, he goes well fresh and at this course (has won twice here) and, all in all, has plenty going for him. Broken Spear won this in 2021 and looks primed for another bold show having returned to form at Leicester recently, while Another Batt is also shortlisted.
