There are others of interest but two against the field are VERDANSK and Lajooje. The selection is unraced for 78 days since his eyecatching C&D debut but has a Group 1 Middle Park entry, while Lajooje went close in promising style on his debut at Ffos Las.
Both Skysail and PASPALEY shaped with promise on their respective debuts and William Haggas’s 2yo could be open to the greater progress. He wasn’t given a hard time at Newcastle when learning on the job and a much-improved showing looks on the cards. Acai, Dark Trooper, Vecchio and What A Whopper have all offered encouragement, while the booking of Ryan Moore for newcomer Trilby catches the eye.
This could turn out to be very informative. Even with Wyoming escaping a penalty for winning a Class 5 at Windsor and Crystallium impressing on her debut, PEONY looks the pick of those to have run after chasing home a potential top-notcher in a good time at Salisbury. Of the newcomers, expensive yearling Elegancia (second choice) represents a yard that usually saves a good one for this race (won three of the last four runnings).
The Parent brings momentum into his handicap debut and makes obvious appeal with the promise of more to come, while Surely Not could well benefit from the handling of Hollie Doyle. However, STRAWBERRY BELLE may have got off lightly with just a 2lb nudge for mixing it with higher-rated opposition in a valuable sales race at Newmarket last time.
A long-established conditions race that has been a stepping stone to stardom for many a good horse down the years. Highbank looked hot property at Newmarket but preference is for CLASSIC, who is no less promising. He should be that bit more streetwise after three starts and is taken to dominate from the front, as was the case last time. Stormbuster is useful but evidently vulnerable to something with Group-race potential.
It’s not difficult to construct a case for several of these. Saleymm and Tacarib Bay arrive in peak form, which is more than can be said for SACRED, but William Haggas’s filly nonetheless gets the verdict in the hope that a return to Newbury will spark a revival in her fortunes. At her best she’s certainly the one to beat. Jumby should be thereabouts but has to concede plenty of weight, so perhaps the biggest threat will come from Shine So Bright who was at the top of his game in the spring and has a good record when fresh.

The lightly raced 3yo Wandering Rocks has clear potential for 1m4f. However, this may be best left to the two at the top of the weights, with recent 1m6f winner SAM COOKE (nap) perhaps looking a bit more potent than Mahrajaan who registered some serious form again last time out but now has another change in equipment.
It might be best to forgive SECRET BOX his ring-rustiness when reappearing four weeks ago. He’s lightly raced and stays 1m2f well. Ascending shaped nicely for today’s step up in trip last time and is second on the list, while Kattani was runner-up in this race last year, Vee Sight has notable form this summer and Stately Home holds interest on what he has done over 1m.
