York’s Ebor meeting on ITV starts here with a heritage handicap over an extended 5f. As long as stall one is not a massive disadvantage, there is no doubt that MAKANAH has strong each way claims for Julie Camacho and Paul Hanagan. We’ll just have to take the draw on trust, but a mark of 101 is workable for my selection. Dropping back to 5f will be ideal after just fading late on in the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood last time. He still ran a cracker then. Worth a few quid each way.
PADDY’S PICK 5 IS OPEN TO PLAY AT YORK
14:25 – Local Dynasty
This is the Group 3 Acomb Stakes for juveniles over 7f. It’s impossible to know what he achieved first time out at Newmarket, but LOCAL DYNASTY put up a very good effort to win easily having got loose before the race. The son of Dubawi is clearly talented and hails from the strong Charlie Appleby stable with William Buick on top. Connections have a good line on Mill Stream via Noble Style.

15:00 – Secret State
The Group 2 Voltigeur for colts and geldings who are 3yo over 1m4f. Really frustrating there are not eight runners in here! Hard to oppose SECRET STATE with trainer Charlie Appleby saddling the likely top two in the market and sticking William Buick on my selection. Secret State was suggested to be a St Leger hope after his Goodwood win and seems to be improving with every race.
15:35 – Baaeed
Wednesday’s feature in the Group 1 Juddmonte International over an extended 1m2f. Not a betting race this for me – I’m just hoping BAAEED is even better at 10f than he is over 1m and he’s pretty good over that distance as the best racehorse on the planet! His pedigree has always suggested he will be better over further, and anyone who watches his debut win will be surprised that he was kept over a mile after that success. I can’t wait to see what he can do over this trip, and I am expecting fireworks. I hope I’m not disappointed as we all know his fractions oozed speed at Goodwood! Best of luck to William Haggas and Jim Crowley.

A handicap over an extended 2m. ROCK EAGLE has runs to his name that suggest an eachway chance here now rated 98. They include a fifth in the Cesarewitch off 100 and his form this season suggests he’s capable of still running to that kind of level. I’ll back him eachway for Ralph Beckett and Rob Hornby.
