The news broke this week that leading Irish rider and popular racing figure Pat Smullen had passed away after a long illness.

His decorated racing CV illustrated the qualities he had in the saddle, but the outpouring of sympathy across the globe even better illustrates the qualities he had out of it.

A universally-liked character, Pat faced his illness with incredible bravery.

He simply rolled up his sleeves and got on with it, all while raising over €3million for Cancer Trials Ireland throughout last summer.

Sports fans have lost a great, but most importantly, Frances has lost her husband and Hannah, Paddy and Sarah have lost their dad.

Our thoughts and condolences are with them, and all of Pat’s friends and family at this time.
