Derry v Cork

Sunday, 1:45pm
TV: RTE Two

Derry To Win By 4-6 Points
No disrespect to Cork but I Derry would have been the happiest of all the teams when the quarter finals draw was made. They beat Cork in the league but didn’t do it all that convincingly. They’re in a different place at the moment though. They’ll have had that week break as well.

Cork are coming off a really good victory over Roscommon last week but the likes of Stephen Sherlock is not going to get the space he got last week. He was getting the ball in huge amounts of space and going one-on-one. Derry are not going to allow that to happen. And, they certainly won’t allow Cork to run down the middle at them, which was the case for Cork against Roscommon.

This is one of the more clear-cut games of the weekend and it just has to be a Derry win by 4-6 points.

Shane McGuigan First Goalscorer
It’s hard to look past Shane McGuigan, he’s hit the net four or five times in the League and Championship this season already. Derry have threats coming from everywhere; Padraig McGrogan, Ciaran McFaul and Benny Heron scored first in their last match but McGuigan is the bigger threat.

Dublin v Mayo

Sunday, 4pm
TV: RTE Two

Dublin to Win by 1-3 Points
Can Mayo beat the Dubs? Look, if any team can raise their game to play Dublin, it’s Mayo. I’m sure a lot of effort and emotion went into their victory over Galway last week. The only thing I’d be a little bit worried about, from the Dublin point of view is, are they coming in a little undercooked?

They’ve not really had a serious test yet. Even throughout the round robin series of games. I know they drew with Roscommon but it was a very pedestrian game, very lacklustre. They’ve had this situation where they’ve had a lot of poor games in Leinster but were always able to get themselves to an All-Ireland quarter final despite no real competition along the way.

Matthew Ruane didn’t start for Mayo last weekend and if he doesn’t start he’ll be a big miss for them in the middle of the field. Dublin will be tested but they should win by a few points.

Con O’Callaghan First Goalscorer
This is the one game of the weekend where you can guarantee goals. We’ve an abundance of goalscorers on both sides.  I’m not sure what the situation is with Mayo’s Ryan O’Donaghue and whether or not he’s going to be available. He’ll be a big miss in terms of scoring goals if he doesn’t feature.

I’ve picked Con O’Callaghan before this season and he scored first in Dublin’s last game against Sligo as well. He’s score a few goals already this season and I’d fancy him to hit the net again on Sunday.
