22- ACCA CRACKER - NEW CAP 1024

Last weekend’s fixtures saw a Dublin derby with a decisive refereeing decision that’s proven incredibly divisive, two sides without managers going hammer and tongs and producing displays full of promise, a goalkeeper producing the save of the season from point-blank range and the already-relegated basement side showing more and more promise.

I swear by the time we’ve finished discussing a slate of League of Ireland fixtures, the next lot of games are already kicking off. And given the top of the table is beginning to congest, these games are the real indication of who can prevail in high-pressure situations.

Let’s have a butcher’s at Friday night’s games.

Bohemians v Derry City – Bohs and the Draw

Derry City are much better away from home for a number of reasons – but one of them is due to opposition teams overloading them, resulting in higher probability chances for them on the road.

The Candystripes are still in the bottom half when it comes to chance conversion in the league, so playing against open teams is far more beneficial given they’ve no natural finisher outside of Colm Whelan who’s injured.

But Bohs don’t commit bodies forward for the sake of it, and they attack sides in very direct ways – primarily through balls into the box or playing through Jonathan Afolabi.

There are no easy outs here, and Bohs will prove the foil.

Dundalk v Cork City – Dundalk to Win

This is a bit of a gift in reality. Dundalk are now in the ascendancy because their individuals are in form. No other club in the country is more dependent on streaky players than the Lilywhites, but with them seemingly firing now, as well as the benefit of Oriel Park, they should be home and hosed by half time.

The display that Cork City gave against St. Pat’s might well fill people with hope but their goals were either aided by a huge deflection or a header from outside the box. Neither are indicative of long-term success. And because of that, we’re benefitting from an inflated price on the visitors winning.

St. Pats v Drogheda – Drogheda and Draw

Speaking of sides who saw a managerless bump last week who should fall down due to the reality of not having a long-term identity to train towards – the Saints.

Drogheda are a much better side than they’re being given credit for; they’re struggling because of Freddie Draper’s inefficiencies in front of goal, but their supporting cast are all flying.

The one thing they do have is a way of playing that should see them prepared, whereas the readiness of this St. Pats side has to be a real concern – especially in front of a crowd that are on-edge right now.

UCD v Shamrock Rovers – Over 3.5 Goals

I love the idea that UCD are now just foregoing their early-season tentativeness and going at teams left, right and centre. It almost proved fruitful against Shels last week as they went down by the odd goal and it’s previously gotten them results against league leaders Bohs and relegation rivals Cork City.

Essentially, they think by chasing three points instead of one, they, by the end of the season, will surpass the Leesiders because they’re capable of passages of play that City aren’t.

And they could well have a point and I admire the commitment. But they’re now up against the most ruthless attacking machine in the country and will leak goals down that left flank.
