Paddy’s football ambassador Phil Thompson is on hand to guide us through a potential banana skin for Everton as they host long-relegated Sheffield United late on Sunday. The Toffees’ home form is appalling and Thommo is worried they might come a cropper against The Blades.
But surely Everton are too good for a side who have won just 17 points all season? Maybe it’s his Merseyside pride but Thommo’s backing the Bluenoses to get it done. But, what are his best bets for this one?
I would like to think this is an easy win for Everton but it’s at Goodison Park which is where Everton have had all their problems. You saw last week with the win away against the Champions League chasing West Ham, they get that result, they get a clean sheet and you think, ‘What is it about Goodison Park?’
Well, I’ll tell you what it is. It’s because at Goodison Park, against most teams, Everton have got to make the play and that’s not what this team is set up for. They’re set up to play counter-attacking football because that’s their best bet.
Sunday 7pm: Everton v Sheffield United BT Sport 1 and BT Sport Ultimate
Sitting deep on the edge of their own box and then counter-attack. This could be, I’ve got it written down here, a banana skin for Everton. They’ll will be thinking, ‘this should be an easy win,’ which is the problem for them.
Do Sheffield United put away the flip flops and say, ‘right, we’re going to shock you, we’re going to come out to play’? They’ve got something to play for. There will be players trying to get new contracts. They lost at home against Crystal Palace last week and were relegated on April 17th. But, come on, Everton have to win this one.
