Luis Garcia accused Newcastle of not doing enough to help their star players settle after their dreadful start to the season.
Steve Bruce’s side were hammered 5-0 by Leicester at the weekend and big-money summer signing Joelinton is struggling to settle.
Miguel Almiron also came in for big money in January after making the switch from the MLS, but he is still to score in a Toon jersey.
And Spaniard Garcia, who arrived at Liverpool himself in 2004 with no experience of playing abroad, thinks he knows why it’s not happening for the new boys.
“Almiron has come from a totally different league and arrived in a completely different culture,” he told the Liquid Football podcast, which is produced by JOE in partnership with Paddy Power.
He has arrived in a place where the sun doesn’t come very often and it’s difficult.
“He’s a Latin player who needs that kind of thing. He’s clearly a fantastic player, he has good speed, he has everything to be good – but only if he’s in a surrounding or an atmosphere that is helping him to adapt.
“If you arrive at a moment when in the first game the fans are whistling at the manager and you’re not getting any points, people start talking.
“Imagine how you would feel after you have made the move of your career, coming from the other side of the world to the Premier League.”
Fellow Liquid Football guest Jon Walters agreed with Garcia and believes it is the responsibility of the captain – currently Jamaal Lascelles at Newcastle – to make a new player feel welcome.
“We had this years ago with Stoke,” he said. “We had a high turnover of players and we had some Spanish lads come in and we had a couple of French boys come in
The captain has got to make them feel welcome and their families.
“There are so many things like that that come into modern football now.”
