5.45 – Solar Joe

I must admit I was hugely tempted by Midarr as the handicapper is relenting and he showed over the course and distance two outings back that he could be competitive here, but his run at Chester, (conditions in his favour) was disappointing so the nod goes to his less exposed rival Solar Joe. It could be that Richard Fahey’s charge is over bet as he was a huge eye catcher last time out at Haydock Park. But if takes another step forward on his first start over a mile and a half I think he could be very hard to beat.

6.15 – Miss Myers

I think this looks a little bit more tricky than the opening handicap, but one thing we have on our side is that we know there is likely to be pace aplenty on here. That kind of set-up should suit the Irish raider and outsider Miss Myers. She travelled strongly at Galway at the end of June without getting a shot at the leaders over what was too sharp a trip. This is more her bag and she gets the each-way call over the likes of likes of the well treated Roscioli and likely market leader and hat-trick seeking Postmark. I could also have a forecast split on the last named and the selection.

6.45 – Young Fire

Young Fire promised so much on his opening start at York, but has been rather disappointing since. It could be that the rains of September and October will see him return to winning form on the turf, probably at his beloved Doncaster. However, he has run well here before and the assessor has been rather lenient in dropping him down to a rating of 88, ran well here over 7f last season off 94. If Jason Watson can get him covered up in mid pack then produce him late on I think he will see off the majority of these with Dingle and the frustrating Menai Bridge arguably his biggest rivals.

7.15 – Riot

The two course and distance winners, Zip and Honky Tonk Man, came under consideration with the former the more likely selection player. He has been plying his trade in slightly better races without any success, but this is a significant drop in grade for this seasoned handicapper. He has a lovely draw which should enable Harrison Shaw to drop him in behind and if on a going day I think he should hit the three and possibly more. I will combining him in forecasts and tricasts along with Abolish and Riot. The tip was given a very considerate ride by Tudhope at Ayr last time out after a short break and looks ready to strike here with a likely end to end gallop set to set him.

7.45 – Hiatus

A nursery handicap with plenty of possibilities and despite top weight, Minnesota Lad is hugely respected following an impressive Beverley success. This extra 220 yards looks sure to suit him on both his run style and breeding and I may well have a saver on the son of Sioux Nation. But in receipt of 13lbs and running in his first handicap I suspect that Conrad Allen’s charge Hiatus could be nicely treated. He was far from disgraced in a fair race at Newmarket last weekend and although it is hard to assess against other unexposed animals, I think he should take another significant step forward in what looks a competitive heat.

8.15 – Vince Lombardi

True Mason was never the most consistent of sprinters, but three wins from his last four outings off 62, 69 and 77 have emphatically bucked that trend. Even off his new rating of 84 is still fairly treated on the best of his old, peak form and demands plenty of respect in this kind of red hot form following his smooth success at Wolverhampton 11 days ago. The old boy may well win again, but the better value wager could well be the three-year-old Vince Lombardi, winner over this trip at Carlisle. A 6lbs penalty is almost offset by the booking of solid 5lbs claimer Oisin McSweeney and I make him the best each-way bet on the card.

8.45 – Zargun

Zargun has been handed some really stiff tasks of late culminating with an 18th spot in the Stewards Cup when he was hampered close home. I actually think that even a sharpish six furlongs just tests the petrol gauge and back down to a testing straight five should prove right up his street. The last time the top weight ran over this minimum trip he ran well at York and this is arguably his easiest task for some time so I was surprised he was such a big price. Of his rivals, I have the most respect for the consistent Cuban Breeze under Frankie and Never Dark. The last named is becoming dangerously well weighted.
