The final Classic of the Irish Flat racing season takes place at Curragh on Champions Weekend this month.

That’s right, the Irish St Leger, the longest of the five iconic contests, is racing into sight as the staying types bid to land one of the most lucrative renewals on the calendar. A couple of key differences with the St Leger at Doncaster is that the Irish equivalent is open to horses aged three years and older and geldings can also take part so expect to see plenty of experienced and familiar runners in the field.

Sonnyboyliston came out on top in last year’s race by ¾l from Twilight Payment – the victory came three weeks after scoring in the prestigious Ebor Handicap at York – but the five-year-old gelding will not be back to defend his crown.
