C’MON KENNY is bred for more speed than stamina, but made a winning start to his career in a bumper at Ludlow earlier this year and ran even better when runner-up under a penalty over the same course and distance on his next start. He has shaped well in three starts over shorter on the Flat more recently, staying on well from far back under a patient ride at Chester last month. C’mon Kenny rates the type that will do significantly better now moving up in trip on handicap debut and he easily appeals most of these. Dawn View arrives in good nick and should go well again.
WHITE JASMINE showed fairly useful form on her first two starts, no match for the useful Hello You on debut at Wolverhampton and running to a similar level at Haydock 16 days later. She probably did too much too soon on that occasion, and never really got the chance to show what she can do in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot last time after being hampered at the start. This assignment is much less taxing and she is fancied to put her experience to good use. Porsche Cavalier is interesting for a new stable, while Build Me Up catches the eye on debut for a yard with a strong team of juveniles.
SUNSET BAY ran a cracker when runner-up at Salisbury nine days earlier and was comfortably on top of a rival with recent winning form able to race from the same mark at Newbury last month, so 6 lb rise may not be enough to prevent the follow up, especially as she may have a bit more to offer now back on a sounder surface. Mighty Power is still relatively unexposed, while Billy Mill’s current mark remains a workable one.
COUL KAT produced a career-best effort when winning a handicap over course and distance in May, but wasn’t in anywhere near the same form over a mile and a quarter at Chester last time. He needs to dispel that effort now, but the return to this shorter trip and venue should suit and the booking of Oisin Murphy is an added bonus. Dogged is feared on his penultimate third over course and distance, whilst Enigmatic is another who can be in the mix.
BARN OWL has an excellent pedigree – out of the same connections’ Group 1 winner Thistle Bird – and he duly showed improved form to open his account upped to a similar trip as this at Ripon last month. That was also his first start since undergoing a breathing operation, which clearly had an effect, showing good determination in the closing stages to hold on from the fast-finishing runner-up. The handicapper has allotted him a potentially lenient opening mark of 84 and he may take off now having got his head in front. Just Fine took a step back in the right direction at Royal Ascot and the drop back in trip should be in his favour.
RAVENS ARK and Snowalot are the two who jump off the page. The latter had plenty in hand at Salisbury 10 days ago, but Ravens Ark has been shaping as if he’ll relish this extra distance, and he can prove himself on a handy mark now having his stamina tested further. Byron Hill shaped quite well in the Northumberland Vase at Newcastle and is best of the others.
