Paddy Power Millionaire Chase tips: The best bets from our experts

Paddy is (finally) giving away £1m at Sandown on Saturday March 13th in the 14.25 Imperial Cup – just before the Cheltenham Festival comes under orders three days later.

If you somehow missed it, we’ve been running qualifiers over the last few months leading up to the Millionaire Chase and all our lucky sweepstake spot owners have already been paid £/€10,000 just for making it this far – with a further £/€990,000 going to whoever draws the winning horse in Saturday’s 14.25 race at Sandown.

We’ve had three cracks at running the race so far in 2021 only for the weather to intervene so hopefully it’s a case of fourth time lucky this weekend.

Frank Hickey – MACK THE MAN & HASANABAD (BOTH EACH-WAY)

We’re paying five places here and because of that, I’m going to pick two runners as they’re both big prices. The first is MACK THE MAN for Evan Williams. If you go back to last season, he beat Lightly Squeezed at Warwick off the mark of 115. He followed that up by winning a competitive handicap here at Sandown last December, beating Protektorat and Song For Someone.

When you look at it, Protektorat is rated 22lbs higher and Song For Someone is rated 11lbs higher. Mack The Man, however, is only rated 6lbs higher. He didn’t really take to chasing at all this season but if you’re willing to forgive him, he’s a huge price! He’s still only seven so I’d have a couple on him.

The other one is HASANABAD for Ian Williams. He won this a few years ago with London Pride. Hasanabad is rated 92 on the flat and he’s been brought along over hurdles. He’s shown ability and I thought he ran well at Newbury last week. That could be a sighter for this race. Ian Williams is flying at the moment too. He’s had nine winners in his last 31 runners. I like both Mack The Man and Hasanabad, they’re both worth an each-way go.

Paddy Power – LEONCAVELLO

Unsurprisingly, an open race here and I fancy LEONCAVELLO for the Pipes. They’re having a good season and they’ve targeted the Imperial Cup bonus at Cheltenham a few times in the past. We haven’t seen Leoncavallo since October where he finished sixth, which is a big break but he’s run well after time off before.

I was also impressed at Haydock the run before that and he looks relatively well handicapped here. Leoncavallo has probably been targeted for this race and I think there’s some value. You could easily be strong on the two favourites Natural History and Langer Dan too but I quite like Leoncavallo so I’ll stick with him.

Matt Chapman – MALAYA

Now the feature betting race, the huge Paddy Power Imperial Cup, over 2m. Natural History could be thrown in on Flat form, but I’ll have a few quid each-way on MALAYA who is well handicapped on some of her form off a rating of 134 having once been as high as 142.

She won this race in 2019 when rated 136 and while she’s been out of form it doesn’t take a genius to think Paul Nicholls will have targeted this and Bryony Frost might just get a right tune out of the mare.

Mick Fitzgerald – MIRANDA

Natural History bolted up at Plumpton after his very lenient handicap mark and he has since gone up 16lbs in the ratings. This will be much more difficult for him, even though he is an honest type and Gary Moore has a good record at the track. Langer Dan was eye-catching at Market Rasen after a wind operation. He has some really good form to his name, including finishing sixth in last years Fred Winter at the Cheltenham Festival. The Skelton team are flying and he is bound to be on everybody’s shortlist.

Malaya won this race two years ago and is on a very similar mark, but she has been deserted by stable jockey Harry Cobden who rides Diego Du Charmil instead. I like MIRANDA in here, she won very nicely at Doncaster and with a good 7lbs claimer taking weight off, in the form of Angus Cheleda, she is a very each-way price.
