FA Cup fifth-round: Bristol City v Manchester City
Tuesday, February 28
TV: ITV (8pm)

Manchester City -2

Bristol City come into this tie in excellent form. Nigel Pearson’s side are unbeaten in 12 games in all competitions in a run stretching back to Boxing Day. However, they face a completely different animal when they take on Manchester City in the FA Cup.

The Premier League giants have not been in great form themselves recently, drawing against both Nottingham Forest and RB Leipzig, although they did secure a comfortable 4-1 win at Bournemouth on Saturday night. City have not played any non-top flight opposition in either cup competition this season but have made a habit of hammering them into submission under Pep Guardiola.

Last season, Guardiola’s side won all four games against non-Premier League opposition in the FA Cup and League Cup by a minimum of two goals, winning three of those games by three goals or more. It’s hard to see anything other than another comfortable cup victory, despite Bristol’s good recent form.

Julian Alvarez to Score Anytime

Erling Haaland is an unbackable 3/10 to score anytime on Tuesday night, especially considering he is likely to be rested. Julian Alvarez, who scored City’s opener in Saturday’s win over Bournemouth, is much better value to find the back of the net.

The Argentinian forward has made a decent start to life in Manchester, scoring 10 goals in 30 appearances. That is not too shabby considering he has largely played a supporting role to Haaland. Alvarez has already scored one goal in the FA Cup and will be confident of scoring against Championship opposition on Tuesday night.

Cole Palmer to Score Anytime

Cole Palmer has yet to score this season, failing to kick on from a breakthrough campaign that saw him net three times in cup competitions for City. The 20-year-old forward is clearly a talented prospect and will score goals when given a chance, and he should be given a chance here.

Palmer has only started in cup competitions this season and it stands to reason that he will start when City travel to Bristol. Two of Palmer’s goals last season came in comfortable wins against lower-league opposition, while his other goal came in a 5-1 win over Club Brugge in the Champions League group stages.

He should flourish in a low-pressure environment and can open his account for the 2022/23 season.

Both Teams to Score

Man City have not been as defensively solid this season as they have been in recent campaigns. Guardiola’s side have conceded 25 league goals in 25 games this season at (you guessed it) a rate of one goal per game.

They conceded just 26 goals in the entire league season last year and have clearly become more porous at the back. City have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five games, conceding consolation goals against both Aston Villa and Bournemouth.

City have also conceded in six of their last eight games against lower-league opposition in cup competitions, giving Bristol hope of at least scoring a consolation goal on Tuesday night.
