13:50 – City House

Plenty are in with a shout in this one. CITY HOUSE made a really good impression (and became a Timeform ‘Horse In Focus’) when well backed and opening his account at Kempton last autumn, so James Fanshawe’s Night Of Thunder colt is fancied to return in style, and defy a 13 lb hike in the weights. York scorer Pilgrim is handily weighted for his handicap debut, so heads the list of dangers, despite encountering quicker ground here. A good case can be made for the likes of Mashadi, North View, Irish Nectar and Woodhay Wonder in this highly-competitive handicap.

14:25 – Padesha

A race with lots of expensive/well-bred sorts and the market provides plenty of clues with no form to go on, but PADESHA is evidently well thought of, given the host of Group 1 entries he holds, so is an obvious place to start. Charlie Appleby has an excellent record with three-year-old newcomers, so First Conquest, who comes from a successful family, makes the shortlist. The Gosden team has also won this twice in recent years and the beautifully-bred Lead Artist looks to bee the pick from that yard.

15:00 – Shouldvebeenaring

A typically strong renewal of this Group 3 contest. SHOULDVEBEENARING had several of these behind, with a terrific second in the Betfair Sprint Cup at Haydock in September, and is likely to be spot-on following a spin on the all-weather last month. The admirable Commanche Falls will surely be in the mix as he was when chasing home Garrus last year. There was only a head between them, and older sprinters have a good record in this race, he’s second choice ahead of Run To Freedom and Spycatcher.

15:35 – Eben Shaddad

This looks to be a cracking renewal. EBEN SHADDAD set a good standard on his Dewhurst third to City of Troy, and there should be more to come this year, so he’s preferred to French raider Alcantor. He was a good half-length second to Sunway in the Criterium International at Saint-Cloud last time, not settling early, and headed late on. Charlie Appleby has a good record in the race and Native Approach looks a much more solid contender than last year’s disappointing favourite Mysterious Night. This better ground should see Cambridge in a better light on this return to action, but it’s not a race his yard has done well in.

16:10 – Izipizi

The Gosdens look to hold a strong hand with the promising IZIPIZI and Miss Kubelik possibly the pair to focus on. The former shaped with definite promise when chasing home another of their stablemates on debut at Kempton in December and shades the vote despite dropping in trip. That said, the latter did particularly well under the circumstances when filling the same spot on her respective debut and market confidence behind her looks significant. Nottingham third Rolica and Painite, who should appreciate this longer trip, are others to consider.

16:45 – Endless Victory

This looks to be a useful novice’s race but it’s hard to get away from ENDLESS VICTORY, who displayed a potent turn of foot when making a winning start at Wolverhampton. He’s a brother to the very smart winner up to 2m (Dubai Gold Cup and stayed 2½m) Cross Counter and this Derby entrant can improve a lot as his stamina is explored. Meydaan and Kalidasa also struck at the first time of asking, at Newcastle and Wolverhampton respectively, and can progress in their own right. This longer trip will suit High Order who showed plenty on debut over a mile.

17:20 – Pearle D’or

With a good pace expected, the strong-travelling PEARLE D’OR is preferred. He went like the best horse in the weights when third in the Challenge Cup at Ascot last October, and represents a yard who possess an exemplary record with older handicappers, so a chance is taken that he’ll overcome a high draw to springboard what could be a fruitful season. Northern Express was amongst the most solid handicappers around last term, and is respected back in trip, whilst the unexposed Poet Master and French raider Suviana are considered.
