13:50 Newmarket – Pen Portrait (each-way)
The Simon and Ed Crisford trained Pen Portrait could well be one of these improving types. His form matches up closely with Almarada Prince and he has scope off his mark. He beat the favourite City House at Wolverhampton and gets the nod.
14:05 Cheltenham – La Renommee
It is so different riding at Cheltenham on good ground compared to the soft and heavy conditions that the horses have been running on all winter. It’s important to find runners who will cope with the conditions and La Renommee is definitely one of those. Her second at Doncaster to Limerick Lace reads well in the context of this race.
14:25 Newmarket – First Conquest
Five of First Conquest’s siblings have won and it’s really interesting that Charlie Appleby chooses to debut this son of Teofilo here. They have won this the last two years and the family all have form over further. Keep an eye on the market though.
14:40 Cheltenham – Pretending
The Lucy Wadham-trained Pretending finished a good second at Newbury but more importantly was a good second in this race last year behind Under Control, which now looks very good form. She will love the conditions and is still fairly well handicapped.
15:00 Newmarket – Commanche Falls
Commanche Falls was beaten by Garrus in this last year but he is a consistent sort who never runs a bad race. Garrus is hard to predict but the booking of Ryan Moore, who won on Garrus last year, is a plus for Charles Hills’ horse. I am sticking with Commanche Falls to get revenge.
15:35 Newmarket – Alcantor
Andre Fabre is always to be respected when he sends runners to the UK. Alcantor won a Group 2 over a mile on soft ground and finished second in a Group 1 at Saint Cloud at the end of the season when strongly fancied. Just the fact that this genius trainer is sending him is a sign and I’m willing to take a punt that he has developed well over the winter.
