Real Madrid v Man City
Champions League match at the Santiago Bernabeu
TV: TNT Sports, Tuesday, 8pm

Over 2.5 Goals

For the fourth time in five seasons, Manchester City have been drawn against Real Madrid in the knockout stages of the Champions League. City have won four out of six meetings since 2020, including a 4-0 demolition in the second leg of their semi-final last season, but Real have given them more than a few problems, notably knocking City out following a stunning comeback in the 2022 semi-final.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side also posed plenty of questions in the first leg last season, with City managing to salvage a 1-1 draw through a magnificent Kevin De Bruyne goal. Incidentally, that 1-1 draw has been the only meeting between City and Real to feature fewer than three goals, with the two sides scoring a combined 23 goals in six games to date.

Tuesday’s first leg is unlikely to be low-scoring. City have scored three goals in each of their eight Champions League games this season, making them the top scorers in the competition, while Real have scored 18 in eight games, making them the third-highest scorers.

Over 4.5 Cards

City also boast the best disciplinary record in the competition, receiving just five bookings in the Champions League to date at a rate of roughly one card every two games.

Real have received nearly three times as many cards as City, picking up 14 bookings so far, but that translates into a record of just under two cards per game, which is hardly indicative of disciplinary problems.

However, this is now the business end of the Champions League and stakes are about to rise a notch. 18 yellow cards were issued in the last four meetings between City and Real at a rate of 4.5 per game. There is every chance that there will be at least five cards issued on Tuesday night.

Erling Haaland to have 2 or more Shots on Target

Erling Haaland continues to endure a strange season. Top scorer in the Premier League and joint top scorer in Europe, it still feels as if his season hasn’t really kicked into life.

Haaland ended a mini drought of three games without a goal by scoring at Crystal Palace at the weekend and will be keen to hit the front in the race for the European Golden Shoe on Tuesday.

Haaland averages a whopping 5.3 shots per game in the Champions League this season, by far the most in the competition, and it is not inconceivable that he registers at least two shots on target at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid to have 5 or more Shots on Target

Real Madrid rattled City’s cage in the first leg of their semi-final last season, attempting 13 shots and finding the target on four occasions. They are not afraid of City at the Bernabeu and are likely to put them under serious pressure on Tuesday.

Real have attempted the second-highest number of shots in Europe this season, averaging 18.8 shots per game in their eight matches so far. They have also averaged 6.1 shots on target in the competition to date.

That is obviously inflated because they have not yet played an elite team, but they are clearly an attacking side and are more than capable of putting City under pressure in the first leg.

Rodri to Attempt 90 or more Passes

It is completely unsurprising to learn that Rodri averages the most passes of any player in the Champions League this season. The Spanish maestro has completed an average of 107 passes per game this season with a completion rate of 92%, meaning he attempts well over 110 passes per 90 minutes.

That is greatly helped by the fact that City enjoy a tournament-high average of 71.3%, a simply staggering statistic. They will not enjoy such lofty figures on Tuesday, but they will still control the lion’s share of possession.

Last season, City enjoyed 56% of the ball at the Bernabeu, with Rodri completing 81 passes with a 95% completion rate, leaving him just shy of 90 pass attempts.

However, Rodri’s game has gone up a level this season, while City are enjoying slightly higher possession averages in the Premier League, so there is a good chance that they will improve on the 56% possession they enjoyed in Madrid last season. Rodri, by extension, should complete more passes on Tuesday.
