Fulham v Spurs, Monday 8pm TV: Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports Premier League
Fulham to Win
Tottenham’s European hopes took yet another blow when they blew a two-goal lead at the Etihad on Thursday night. In truth, nobody really expected Tottenham to hold on against Manchester City, but the manner in which they folded will have hurt Antonio Conte’s side.
Spurs have lost back-to-back games, going down to a limp defeat in the North London Derby before Thursday’s collapse. They are currently six points off the top four and could find themselves behind Fulham in the table should they lose on Monday night.
Fulham have been excellent this season and have almost certainly ended the ceaseless yo-yoing between the Championship and Premier League at long last. They have won four out of five games since returning from the World Cup break and might have won all five if Aleksandar Mitrovic had kept his footing when taking a penalty against Newcastle last weekend.
As it happened, Newcastle made the most of that reprieve and scored a late winner to hand Fulham their first defeat since mid-November. However, Marco Silva’s side have an excellent opportunity to bounce back on Monday night and are good value to do so against a stuttering Tottenham side.
Both Teams to Score
Tottenham’s concession of four goals at the Etihad means that they now boast the worst defensive record in the top 10, conceding 31 goals in 20 games to date. It is simply staggering that an Antonio Conte team should be so poor defensively, but Spurs have at least found the back of the net at the other end, scoring 39 goals so far. Only City and Arsenal have scored more than Spurs this season, while no side has been involved in more goals than Spurs’ combined total of 70 goals scored and conceded.
Fulham, on the other hand, have conceded 29 goals this season – the second-worst defensive record in the top half. The Cottagers have also scored a respectable 32 goals and will fancy their chances of adding to that tally against such a porous Spurs defence. There should be goals aplenty on Monday night.
It’s hard to imagine just how bad Tottenham would be this season if they didn’t have Harry Kane. The England striker has scored a hugely impressive 15 goals in 20 appearances and would probably be on his way to another golden boot if Erling Haaland didn’t exist.
Kane has been enjoying a stellar season and is the main reason that Spurs even have a glimmer of hope in the hunt for fourth. He averages 3.6 shots per game and is good value to register at least two shots on target against a Fulham side that faces an average of 13.7 shots per game, the sixth-highest average in the league.
Over 10.5 Corners
Only games involving Newcastle and Everton have seen more corners than Tottenham games this season. Spurs have won an average of 5.9 corners per game and conceded an average of 4.6 per game for a combined average of 10.5.
Their average of 5.9 corners per game is the fourth highest in the league behind Liverpool, City, and Spurs and they should at least match that average against a Fulham side that concedes an average of exactly five corners per game.
Fulham, meanwhile, boast an average of 4.8 corners per game but have won 41 corners in their last five home games at a rate of over eight per game. There is a good chance that we will see 11 corners or more on Monday.
