Jurgen Klopp’s legendary status at Anfield will never be in question but, as painful as it might be to most Reds, there will be a time when he jumps or is pushed. As good as 2019/20 was for Liverpool, 2020/21 has been as tough.
Injuries to key men like Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk have hampered their title defence and, with a string of poor results at the start of 2021, their crown has been surrendered rather meekly. Rather than a title challenge it looks like Liverpool will be battling to finish in the top four.
Klopp likes to take his future into his own hands and effectively resigned from his last two roles at Borussia Dortmund and Mainz. While it seems unlikely he will be given the sack by the Kop board, Klopp has a lot going on in his personal life and he may decide to step back from his job on Merseyside.
So, who is likely to replace the German? Paddy’s trusty traders are on hand to show you where the money is going right now with our live betting banners.
Stop the press! Pep could be in pole position to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. Oh, not that Pep. Pep Lijnders. Klopp’s assistant at Anfield features prominently on his list of replacements if Liverpool decide to go down the old Boot Room route.
This one could be a real goer. Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is pulling up trees north of the border at Rangers and he’s managed to emphatically derail the Celtic title train and end their decade-long stranglehold on Scottish football. He employs a vastly different style to Klopp but is a natural-born winner who would clearly be a popular appointment with the Kop faithful.
Another former Liverpool midfield maestro, Xabi Alonso, is cutting his teeth back in his native Spain with Real Sociedad’s B team in Segunda Division B. He’s been there for two years after a spell with Real Madrid’s youth team. No doubt, taking the Liverpool job would be a big step up, though.
Enjoyed Jurgen Klopp? Why not employ the next Jurgen Klopp? Julian Nagelsmann enjoys a booming reputation in Germany after guiding RB Leipzig to the Champions League semi-finals last season and challenging for the title this year. Young, progressive and tactically astute? Nagelsmann could be a hit at Anfield.
Still adored on Merseyside, Rafa Benitez is a free agent after deciding no amount of money was worth hanging around in China for. Benitez won four trophies, including that famous Champions League in Istanbul in 2005, during his six-year stay at Liverpool between 2004 and 2010.
The fact that Thomas Tuchel features on this list is probably a sign that no one expects Klopp to depart Anfield anytime soon. Tuchel only replaced Frank Lampard at Chelsea in January but he has followed Klopp at both of his previous jobs in Germany so why not make it a hat-trick?
