Punting Hall of Fame: How one punter in Coventry won more than £205k off a 25p football accumulator

Think your Saturday afternoon was good? Think again! This guy just nailed a monster 820,278/1 shot!

Eddie Alvarez might be waking up in cloud cuckoo land after taking a few hefty blows from Conor McGregor at UFC 205, but one Paddy Power punter in Coventry is going to wake up on cloud nine on Sunday after landing a monster football accumulator – turning 25p into a life-changing £205k.

On Friday the lucky punter strolled into the Paddy Power shop and stuck just 25p on a football 11-fold that came to a quite frankly ridiculous 820,728/1. It sounds crazy, but that unbelievable optimism has landed that punter in the Hall of Fame, after all 11 results went his way and he scooped just over £205k.

The bet and the all important results were:

  • Armenia to beat Montenegro and over 2.5 goals (6/1) 3-2
  • France to beat Sweden and over 2.5 goals (10/11) 2-1
  • Czech Republic to beat Norway and over 2.5 goals (23/10) 2-1
  • Northern Ireland to beat Azerbaijan and over 2.5 goals (23/10) 4-0
  • Denmark to beat Kazakhstan and over 2.5 goals (10/11) 4-1
  • Millwall to beat Bristol Rovers and over 2.5 goals (2/1) 4-0
  • Port Vale to beat Fleetwood Town and over 2.5 goals (7/2) 2-1
  • Blackpool to beat Notts County and over 2.5 goals (2/1) 4-0
  • Leyton Orient to beat Colchester and over 2.5 goals (7/2) 3-0
  • Cambridge United to beat Crawley and over 2.5 goals (7/2) 3-1
  • Plymouth to beat Crewe and over 2.5 goals (13/50) 2-1

With any punt like this, you need a slice of luck and this punter certainly got it. In total four teams he backed had to come from behind and win. They were France, Plymouth, Cambridge United and Port Vale. Port Vale only actually manged to get the winner against Fleetwood Town in the 86th minute courtesy of Alexander Jones, and that wasn’t the only late drama this punter had to sit through. On Friday night Czech Republic were 2-0 up and cruising against Norway, with this punter sweating on a third goal. Up popped Joshua King in the 87th minute to knock in a consolation goal and keep this punt rolling on.

But none of those pieces of good fortune come close to the leg in which Armenia had to beat Montenegro.

In the first half, goals from Damir Kojasevic and Stevan Jovetic put Montenegro 2-0 ahead, and it looked like this accumulator would be over before it even got going. Five minutes after half-time Varazdat Haroyan pulled one back, but Armenia only struck the equaliser after 74 minutes, with Haroyan again finding the onion bag. The clock clicked past 90 minutes and you’d have forgiven this punter for binning his betting slip. That was of course until Gevorg Ghazaryan managed to get the winner in stoppage time and help scoop this punter a whopping £205k. The midfielder who plies his trade with Portugese side Maritimo might not be a household name – but he will certainly is a hero somewhere in Coventry!

Take a bow good sir. This is a hell of a punt!
