The Royal Rumble is less than two weeks away and in case you’ve been living under a rock of late, we can’t bloody wait here at Paddy Power.
We promised to pack you with more wrestling content than you could fit inside Hell in a Cell and that continues this week! Raw and Smackdown Live reviews will of course be on the way, but we have a few Vince McMahon-like surprises up our sleeves to boot.
Stay tuned for more on that as the week goes on, but today we’ve had a look at some of the best superstars to have their first appearance inside the WWE’s squared circle at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view. Here’s who our boffins have picked out…
AJ Styles – 2016
An icon all around the world, it seemed WWE fans would never get to see the “Phenomenal” AJ Styles inside of a Vince McMahon-owned ring – especially given his history in competitor company TNA. Last year though that all changed as he showed up at No.3 to the delight of the crowd in the Amway Center in the Orlando, Florida.
He’d go on to have one of the best debut years in WWE history and will defend the WWE title against John Cena at this year’s event – who’d have ever thought that would be said this time last year!
Tazz – 2000
The ECW legend had done everything he needed to do in Paul Heyman’s upstart promotion when he turned up and blew the roof off Madison Square Garden in the year 2000. Kurt Angle was set to face an opponent to be announced at the Rumble and when that famous ‘13’ logo appeared everyone knew business was about to pick up.
By his own admission he didn’t have the run he wanted in WWE, but he became one of the best commentators the game has ever seen and hosts a very successful online wrestling talk show these days.
Rusev – 2014
Okay we won’t lie, this one was a struggle! But we really couldn’t go with Bo Dallas and the “Bulgarian Brute” Rusev has had a great time of it since his debut. He’s a former two-time United States champion, had a 146-day undefeated streak and even showed up to a Wrestlemania match with John Cena in a bloody tank.
Last week he described himself as the “Bulgarian George Clooney”, what’s not to love about the big guy.
