13:45 – Variety Island

VARIETY ISLAND hasn’t won since October 2021, but he was much better than on his reappearance when finishing fifth at Wetherby last time. He was a little too keen, taking a strong hold and that seemingly told in the closing stages as he was unable to quicken with the principals. Variety Island is now 3 lb below his last winning mark, has the cheekpieces back on now, and he seems sure to be competitive with a strong pace forecast. Dandys Derriere and Red Command are among the dangers.

14:15 – Rooska

ROOSKA was gambled on when finishing a good third on his debut at Musselburgh earlier this month, his inexperience evident and that ultimately cost him on the day. However, he emerged as the best long-term prospect in the race and that experience won’t be lost on him. It was only an ordinary race, but so is this, and he should go close for a yard that are among the winners. Dalton Lane similarly started out well in February and can progress, as can Happier. Dusty Rug makes most appeal of the newcomers.

14:50 – Hala Emaraaty

HALA EMARAATY made most appeal of the newcomers in an ordinary maiden at Ripon 17 days ago and he duly made a winning debut, overcoming inexperience and doing all of his best work at the finish. That was in heavy ground, but a sounder surface should be no problem to him, and with improvement forthcoming, he is up to defying a penalty in a race which is probably not as competitive as the numbers suggest. Taygar is worth another chance to build on her debut success and is feared most, with Our Havana the pick of the newcomers.

15:25 – Grandad Bob

GRANDAD BOB shaped with promise on his first two starts prior to disappointing on his final start last season, but he got back on track after six months off and on his handicap debut at Catterick last month, beaten only by one who showed much improved form after a gelding operation. The ground will be quicker today but he is clearly on a good mark and he may yet have more to offer after just four starts. He’s preferred to Cavalier Approach, with Castan expected to bounce back from a low-key reappearance on testing ground at Nottingham.

16:00 – Turntable

TURNTABLE won back-to-back handicaps on his last two starts for Chris Wall and there is a possibility that soft ground didn’t suit him well on his reappearance and first start for Harry Eustace in a big-field handicap at Newmarket last time. He took a strong hold and was never able to land a blow from off the pace, but he is well worth another chance given how progressive he was last season and he represents an in-form yard. Sole three-year-old Oviedo is an interesting contender now stepping up to a mile and a quarter for the first time, while Chester winner City Streak and the returning Kitsune Power are others to consider.

16:36 – Dukeman

DUKEMAN cost 500,000 guineas as a yearling but didn’t make his debut until halfway through last season. He built on the promise of his debut when running out a convincing winner at Newcastle in September, beating a useful type with something in hand, and he ran creditably under a penalty upped to a mile and a quarter at Epsom on his final start. He is just the type to progress further as a four-year-old and makes plenty of appeal on his handicap debut. Wootton’sun looks a danger on the back of a solid showing at Pontefract and course and distance winner Strawman should bounce back from an excusable run at York.

17:10 – Bearwith

BEARWITH is a better performer on than all-weather, but he did win twice on turf last season, and arrives in top form following a victory on his return to action at Newcastle earlier this month. He is now 6 lb lower from his turf mark and he seems sure to launch another bold bid at a track he goes well at. Just Hiss and The New Marwan needed their reappearance and better is expected this time.

17:40 – Iron Sheriff

IRON SHERIFF was unlucky not to finish closer at Wetherby a fortnight ago, and with this step back up in trip sure to suit, he looks the answer in an open handicap. This stiffer test of stamina will suit Streetscape and he’s a threat, along with Bollin Margaret.
