14:15 Newmarket – Azure Blue

Keep an eye on the weather as there’s rain due to arrive on Saturday but as of now we’re looking at a 6f sprint on what could be fast ground. I’m not sure Gale Force Maya can reverse the form with stablemate Azure Blue from last October and I’m happy to stick with the top weight under Paul Mulrennan.

14:50 Newmarket – Saint Lawrence

A big field handicap over 6f where Paddy’s paying the first 6 places and the draw will play a big role. A lot of the fancied horses are drawn high and that mightn’t suit depending on where the draw bias falls so I’ll give Roger Varian’s Saint Lawrence an each-way squeak with those 6 places. He was third on this card last year in the Group 3 Palace House Stakes over 5f and has been gelded since from a stall 1 draw. He should have come on for his seasonal debut.

15:05 Goodwood – Maghlaak

A very tricky handicap over 1m 1f and Maghlaak could be worth siding with of a rating of 86 despite not having run this season. A lot of the others are exposed or are rated higher than the Charles Hills’ runner on their seasonal debut. I don’t have a strong opinion on the race, however.

15:25 Newmarket – Saga

The Suffolk Stakes is run over the Cambridgeshire distance and the King’s horse Saga could be a fitting winner on Coronation day. He’s been gelded since last year, has the cheekpieces on and should be primed for this day by John & Thady Gosden.

15:40 Thirsk – Pisanello

Four places on offer in the Thirsk Hunt Cup and it’s wide open. Pisanello was third in it last season having won a week before and comes into this year’s contest on the same mark but hasn’t had a run yet. The veteran Safe Voyage could be worth chancing each-way.

16:00 Newmarket – Live In the Dream

A 5f sprint where the top-weight Manaccan and Twilight Falls look to be the best in the race but I’m not sure they’ll be at their best first time out this season. Live In the Dream has run and won twice already so there are no fitness doubts there. He looks an improver and front runs and could take a bit of passing.

16:40 Newmarket – Auguste Rodin / Little Big Bear

I’m looking forward to the feature race of the day, where the 2,000 Guineas is the first Classic of the UK Flat season. It looks to me that the two Ballydoyle horses are the main players, but I fear that Auguste Rodin may need the word ‘firm’ to come out of the going description. If the rain comes or the ground is ‘good’ by the time they go into the stalls, then I’ll be with Auguste Rodin. On faster ground, I’d opt for Little Big Bear.
