Joseph O’Brien started the new flat season in good fashion with several winners over the weekend at the Curragh and Naas. His improving OKITA SOUSHI looks the one for me in this 1m 6f conditions race having done well in recent months around Dundalk. The son of Galileo is versatile distance wise, is fit from recent wins, and should handle some softer ground conditions on pedigree despite most of his career starts coming on better ground.
PARADISE LOST is becoming a bit of a cliff horse for me following his eye-catching second over hurdles at Limerick at Christmas. The Charles O’Brien trained four-year-old disappointed when been turned over at Fairyhouse last month but returns to the Flat off a winnable 69 opening rating on his handicap debut. His previous experience on the level all came at the Curragh over shorter trips, so this stiff finish and longer trip look ideal for the son of Australia to finally get his head in front.
The closing maiden on the card at Navan might be fought out by Joseph and Aidan O’Brien with Just An Hour representing the Piltown team and having the benefit of experience following his second-place finish at Dundalk in December.
He’s a beautifully bred son of Justify who cost 450,000gns and should progress on his second start for the China Horse Racing Club. However, DRUMROLL gets the vote for me of the two Aidan O’Brien newcomers, with this son of Deep Impact making his delated debut. He has both speed and stamina in his pedigree as a brother to Saxon Warrior and a half-brother to More Beautiful. It was encouraging to see Jackie Oh win first time out for team Ballydoyle on Sunday and hopefully this horse can do the same in the Navan finale.
