Paul Nicholls has decided to put Bravemansgame into this novice handicap after his win at Kempton on Boxing Day. It’s obviously the race for him but he does have to give up 16lbs to the second favourite Pats Fancy. It’s a good distance for him and it’s a track he likes. The only worry would be the yard’s form, which Paul addressed earlier this week. He alluded to a couple of things but Bravemansgame is head and shoulders above the rest on form. He’s a brilliant jumper too. I wouldn’t oppose him despite the concerns about the yard’s form.
Indefatigable is the best mare on ratings but I’ve been concerned with her attitude the last couple of times out. She’s been reluctant to line up and go. However, she’s still the best mare and she’ll be hard to beat.
I don’t have a massive opinion on this race but the one worth keeping an eye on is The Big Breakaway. It’s his first run since a wind operation and he’s back over hurdles. He has some decent form in his history and he’s worth keeping an eye on. The second run after a wind op is the ideal time to get behind a horse so remember that next time out.
Edwardstone got brought down at Warwick in November but then won at the same track a couple of weeks later. He’s won at Sandown and Kempton since. He’s an improving horse and Edwardstone can be the favourite for the Arkle by winning here.
Clan Des Obeaux runs for Paul Nicholls but again it comes back to the question marks over the stable’s form. Clan Des Obeaux is theoretically only rated 6lbs higher than Royale Pagaille but to me, at Newbury, over 2m7f, there’s no contest here. Clan Des Obeaux raced close to that in the King George and still managed to finish second. He’s too quick for Royale Pagaille.
If you go back to last April at Aintree, Funambule Sivola gave Shishkin a bit of a run. Funambule Sivola then ran at Huntingdon in December but I don’t think he stayed, he got outstayed by First Flow. He dropped down in distance at Doncaster at the end of last month and won despite making a big mistake at the first. If there’s any horse here who could be a possible each-way shout in the Champion Chase, it’s Funambule Sivola.

I can see why there’s been a few quid put on Dinny Lacey, who was third at Limerick over Christmas. I’d probably be siding with him against horses who are creeping up the handicap, especially the top weight Celebre DAllen.
I don’t see a huge amount of pace in this race and I’m siding with I Like To Move It. I would love something to go a real gallop to drag I Like To Move It along. He’s crying out for it. Sam Twiston-Davies will definitely be forward and that’s what this race needs. I’d be more enthusiastic if there was pace in this race but I’ll still go with I Like To Move It.
