Trainer Archie Watson has been sending out a few winners lately and had a nice winner in Highland Dress at Lingfield yesterday. He runs Variyann in this trappy Class 3 handicap and he gets our vote. Variyann made his all-Weather debut here over course and distance when finishing a close-up second in September.
He went on to score over this trip when making all at Kempton a few weeks later. He was then off for three months before his latest start at Southwell where he weakened inside the final furlong yet was beaten by less than three lengths. Dropped a pound by the handicapper today he’s effectively running off a three pound higher mark than for his Kempton victory. I get the feeling the cobwebs were blown away at Southwell and Variyann should have a big say tonight for his in-form stable.

Thai Terrier has developed a habit of finding one too good in his races. It’s interesting that Mark Johnston discards the cheek pieces, which have been worn the last twice and replaces them with a Visor tonight. The horse remains unexposed at this sort of trip and ran well enough when outgunned in an apprentice handicap in his first try over two miles plus at Wolverhampton earlier this month.
Richard Kingscote is back in the saddle today and we expect an aggressive ride to make the horses mind up for him if he starts looking for company. It’s worth noting than Thai Terrier’s only career win was on his previous visit here 12 months ago. It won’t be pretty but he’s well capable of beating these if putting his best foot forward.
