Forest Green v Brighton – Brighton (-1)

Wednesday brings four EFL Cup clashes with all four English leagues represented so it would be rude not to run the rule over our quartet to present a punchy four-fold acca. We start with League One’s Forest Green hosting the Premier League’s Brighton.

It’s been a mixed bag for FGR in their maiden League One campaign. They’ve played five games in all comps, winning two, losing two and drawing one. The two they’ve won both came against sides who finished below them in the football pyramid during their League Two title-winning campaign last season, Bristol Rovers and Leyton Orient (in the last round).

The Seagulls are soaring and are unbeaten in their three Premier League matches, winning two and drawing one. You’d expect mass rotation from the south-coast club here and we saw plenty of Championship clubs paying the price with an exit in the first round for doing just that.

It’s hard to see that here, though, given the quality, depth and cohesion that even a backup Brighton XI are likely to have. I think the away side will win this quite easily so Brighton (-1) looks a good price.

Leeds v Barnsley – Leeds to Win and Over 2.5 Goals

An all-Yorkshire affair next where top-flight Leeds host Barnsley of League One. Like Brighton, Jesse Marsch’s ‘roster’ have mad a good start, winning two and drawing one while The Tykes have three wins and three losses to their name.

I think we can expect United to rotate and that might give Barnsley a decent chance of getting something here. But even a few Leeds first teamers in the starting line up should be enough to give them the edge against a full strength third-tier side.

The angle here is Over 2.5 Goals but as it’s a bit short we’ll back Leeds’ quality to get them over the line and bolt on the Win inside the 90 minutes. Barnsley started slowly in terms of Over/Under with just three goals across their first three games, but they’ve really kicked into life recently, seeing Overs in their last three.

Over 2.5 Goals has landed in 100% of Leeds’ games this season with 10 goals across their three Premier League matches. Everything’s pointing towards goals then, and I think we have to be on the home win, so Leeds to Win and Over 2.5 Goals feels a great play.

Tranmere v Newcastle United – Newcastle (-2)

TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football

Classic cup fare next where League Two’s Tranmere host the world’s richest club, Newcastle United of the Premier League. The Toon crashed out of the FA Cup to League One’s Cambridge last year but their sole focus then was staying in the top tier.

Will they target the Carabao Cup as a genuine chance at silverware this season? I think they just might and that spells bad news for Rovers who have made a shocking start to their fourth-tier campaign.

They’ve won just one of their six matches, drawing two (beating Accrington 12-11 on penalties in the last round) and lost three. Newcastle are unbeaten and more than held their own in that thrilling 3-3 draw with Manchester City on Sunday.

Even if Newcastle make 11 changes they should have enough to get past Tranmere. I’m expecting a handsome away win so Newcastle (-2) in the handicap market is a cracking price.

Wycombe v Bristol City – Under 2.5 Goals

We finish with what looks to be Wednesday’s closest game on paper, Wycombe v Bristol City. The Chairboys have had an up and down start to their League One season, winning three and losing three while City looks to be hitting their straps, winning three and drawing one of their last four after losing their two opening Championship games.

I think rotation will be on the menu once again here and that could lead to a lack of cohesion from both sides. Goals have been flying in for the hosts with Over 2.5 Goals in all six of their matches so far this season, but that’s not typically their style and they’ve conceded way more goals than you’d usually expect.

A new keeper arrived last week and they secured their first clean sheet since the opening day. The Robins have also tightened up at the back and have won their last two 2-0 with Unders in all three of their most recent matches.

Given Wycombe’s trends this season Overs is the way to go on paper but, if they can build on that clean sheet at the weekend, I think this will be low scoring. City seem to have sorted their backline and I think this will be a cagey game due to the changes which is pointing me towards Under 2.5 Goals.
