Arsenal have made an impressive recovery after their shambolic start to the season thanks, in part, to a kind run of games. But their credentials wont get a much tougher test than a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool. Here to work out if Mikel Arteta’s men are the real deal or not is Paddy Power ambassador and Liverpool legend Phil Thompson.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

He’s ably assisted by Paddy football trader Emmet O’Keeffe as the lads get stuck into this Saturday evening treat. And, for once, everyone’s singing off the same hymn sheet. Let’s see it the guys hit the right notes in their Liverpool v Arsenal tips.

Saturday 5.30pm: Liverpool v Arsenal

TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League

THOMMO: It’s always been a difficult one for Arsenal, coming to Anfield, hasn’t it? Liverpool have made hay against them and won both games last season, scoring three goals in both of them. Arsenal have only scored three away goals, there’s only Norwich who have scored fewer with two.

There’s not a great deal to make you think that Arsenal are going to score goals here. They are maybe a bit better in defence and I think they’re up to 10 unbeaten in all competitions so they are in better form. But Liverpool, against Arsenal, always seem to come up trumps. They’ve had 215 goal attempts, Liverpool, 20 more than anyone else. It shows that they can create and they’re doing it regularly.

But, Mo Salah hasn’t scored in three games believe it or not – he had 10 on the run before. I am going for Liverpool to Win to Nil and I do fancy Salah to Score Anytime and break his dry spell.

EMMET: I think Mikel Arteta still needs that signature win to make Arsenal fans really believe that he’s the man to really take them forward but I still remain sceptical. Anyone who watched them play Brighton earlier in the season away from home, Brighton really controlled the game in midfield.

Arsenal’s midfield of Albert Sambi Lokonga and Thomas Partey, I don’t think they’re up for competing with, say, Jordan Henderson who they’ll face on Saturday. Arsenal’s xG has them as a midtable team, you compare that to Liverpool, who have very similar statistics to Manchester City.

Phil alluded to their shot statistics, I think Liverpool are a level above Arsenal. I’d echo Phil’s sentiments, I’d go for Liverpool to Win and Mo Salah to Score Anytime. That comes out at just over Evens in a Bet Builder and that’s good enough for me.
