It’s the most wonderful time of the year, wall to wall football wherever you look. Another day, another game. Well, it would be if it wasn’t for bloody Covid. Luckily the English football pyramid is vast and there’s still plenty of games about this weekend.

Blackburn v Birmingham City – Blackburn to Win

Starting off in The Championship where Blackburn Rovers are going great guns under the surprisingly-astute management of Tony Mobray. They head into this game in 4th and tackle Birmingham City on Saturday who themselves are doing quite well after a fierce relegation battle last season in 15th.

With the top two choking a little Rovers have hit form at the right time with four wins in a row. They’re just four points off 2nd now and will be looking up with hope heading into the festive season.

City, for their part, have won just one of the last five, drawing two and losing two. With the form and energy that’s going to be buzzing around that Rovers camp we have to be on Blackburn to Win.

AFC Wimbledon v Portsmouth – Portsmouth to Win

Hopping down a division now for Portsmouth’s trip to AFC Wimbledon. Pompey are recovering after a slow start and have racked up six wins in their last eight League One matches.

The Dons have won just two of their last seven, drawing two and losing two. It puts them in 17th spot heading towards the half-way mark. Like with the first match we’ll be siding with the form team here.

Portsmouth have gone four away games without defeat, winning three and drawing one. AFC Wimbledon rarely win at home but they are fairly hard to beat, picking up a lot of draws. Looking at the form our away side here have a great chance so Portsmouth to Win is the pick.

Ipswich v Sunderland – Sunderland to Win

Staying in League One next where 12th-placed Ipswich host the high-flying Sunderland. The Black Cats are 3rd in the third tier, only trailing Wigan in 2nd on goal difference.

Lee Johnson’s side are in good form and are unbeaten in six League One matches, winning four and drawing the other two. The Tractor Boys have won just one of their last six.

Ipswich have been going okay at home but they’ve been beating the weaker teams and losing to the stronger teams in the division. We can firmly put the away side in the latter category and go with Sunderland to Win.

Forest Green Rovers v Mansfield – Forest Green to Win

Forest Green Rovers have been tearing up League Two and it’s a surprise to see they’re only 10 points clear of Newport who sit just outside the automatic spots in 4th. FGR are top, four points clear of Northampton Town in 2nd.

They welcome Mansfield to The New Lawn with The Stags sitting 11th in the division. Nigel Clough’s crew have been going well of late, winning six of their last seven, but those have been against the division’s 8th, 22nd, 24th, 16th, 21st and 17th-placed sides.

Their one loss in that run came against the best side they’ve faced, Sutton, who are 6th. FGR haven’t lost in nine, drawing just three of those. With home advantage, the better squad and system, I’m happy to back Forest Green Rovers to Win and put a dent in Mansfield’s charge up the table.
