Football icon Lionel Messi is understood to have rejected a move to Inter Miami after learning of Phil Neville’s sacking.
Described as “hugely influential” in the early years of Messi’s career, former Man United defender Neville finds himself surplus to requirements after seeing his Miami side rooted to the foot of the table, leaving club owner and lifelong friend, David Beckham, with no choice but to part ways with the most forgettable member of the Class of 92
“Messi was excited by the prospect of playing for one of his heroes,” we were told by a source.
“It’s no secret that Ronaldinho, Pablo Aimar and Phil Neville were the players he looked up to as a youngster, so to see Phil sacked before having the chance to work with him has been heart-breaking for little Leo.”
“Remember how much he cried when he left Barcelona because they couldn’t afford to pay him the GDP of a small country per week? Well, he’s ten times as bad now.”
Indeed, the decision leaves the World Cup winner with few options as he prepares to depart Paris when his contract expires.
“Phil Neville’s heading back to England, so Leo’s been left with no choice but to earn €500m for a year’s work in Saudi Arabia.
“He’s inconsolable at the thought of it,” continued a close associate of the Argentine.
With Neville waving goodbye to the MLS, it isn’t all bad news for the 46-year-old as the Beckham’s have decided to keep him on their family payroll.
As on Monday, Phil will be taking on the role of shop manager at Victoria Beckham’s high end fashion store in London, to the excitement of everybody in the fashion bizz.
“The boy oozes style and sass, so much so that he could be on a catwalk. We are delighted he will be part of the team” confirmed Victoria Beckham’s PR team.
With the managerial merry-go-round in full swing, rumours coming from Miami suggest David Beckham could have already lined up Neville’s replacement in the form of Sam Allardyce.
With Miami needing a relegation escape plan, Big Sam’s name has reached local reporters after his wife admitted he recently downloaded season one of Miami Vice on Netflix and bought himself a flashy pastel coloured suit, describing it as “not something he should be wearing if he is going to continue to eat Greggs six times a day”.
