Detroit Lions @ Kansas City Chiefs
Thursday night, 1:20am
Live on Sky Sports Main Event
The best thing you can become in sport is inevitable – where, though you’re opponent may be ahead, even they know they’re still not going to win just because you always come back.
Think of Man United in 1999, the Limerick hurlers now (sorry, a real home pick) and the New England Patriots for a good two decades.
Well, the Kansas City Chiefs look like they’re going to be one of those superpowers now that everyone will have to topple now.
And while being inevitable is clearly the best thing, the second best thing you can become in sport is hated.
Welcome to the return of the NFL season – and the quest to topple the evil empire.
Detroit Lions (+5.5)
Now, I have to be honest – the Chiefs defense looks a better prospect than the Chiefs offense right now, and that’s quite a thing to say given Patrick Mahomes is still alive and breathing.
But they’re typically coached to limit damage because they know their quarterback will put up near-thirty points every single week.
They’re situational. And that might have to change due to the Chiefs’ lack of clear weapons to score.
But all of that functionality begins and ends with Chris Jones, who has opted to hold out and take millions of dollars worth of fines to force them to offer an improved contract.
There will be a gaping hole in the middle of the Chiefs defense, and given that they’ve got a one-two punch of David Montgomery and the exciting Jamhyr Gibbs at running back, I think this could be a long night for Kansas City if they’re going to try and double cover Amon-Ra St. Brown.
Noah Gray to Score Anytime
The Chiefs’ offensive playbook features about 40% of its volume around the tight end position.
That’s largely because of Travis Kelce. And while I’m not suggesting his absence means that Gray gets the same volume, he will at least benefit from the same design that has you wondering why no defenses seem to cover Kelce week in, week out.
Gray will be open at various stages while KC are in the red zone, and thus he has the biggest opportunity to land in the end zone.
Patrick Mahomes – Over 285.5 Passing Yards
They’re going to need to score points. I know that sounds obvious, but it’s not a situation where the defense is limiting Kansas City to three and outs over and over again, with KC having the ability to run the ball easily off the back of it.
How do you manage to limit the most exciting offense from last year in their first outing of the season, given limited roster turnover, who’ve gained more and more pieces?
Well, you don’t – you throw the ball to match it.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling – Over 42.5 Receiving Yards
Kansas City adapted their game last year when they lost Tyreek Hill. Teams believed that if they made Mahomes throw the ball short with limited star receivers, that they’d fall apart.
They did not.
So now that teams focus their attention underneath, the chance is there to lift the roof off the place.
MVS remains that elite speed option.
Sam LaPorta – Over 29.5 Receiving Yards
The Chiefs have great cornerbacks, but one thing they don’t have is somewhat designated to line up against tight ends.
Sam LaPorta was part of a tight end group that brought real excitement pre-draft, and for good reason. He might be as talented as TJ Hockenson – and you might remember how many targets he used to get a game in this offense.
