We’re a few days away from the big kickoff – as the Kansas City Chiefs open up their 2023 season against the Detroit Lions.

This will prompt mass optimism among fans of all 32 teams. Well, 31 teams – the Texans are barely functional.

And while I have the fear of Patrick Mahomes lifting Vince Lombardi once more and inflicting an era of pain much akin to Tom Brady in Foxboro, I don’t believe it will transpire.

In fact, I’m sure of it.

Please see below for even more convictions, as I punt my deeply-rooted sporting anxieties into the end zone.

Super Bowl Winner – Philadelphia Eagles

It’s hardly original, is it?

But the rich just get richer, and everyone keeps letting them get away with it. There’s a model whereby you maximise the talent on your roster salary-wise while your young star QB is on his team-favourable rookie contract.

And yet despite that, Howie Roseman appears to have just said ‘sod it’, and they’re still bringing in veterans in spite of paying big bucks to Jalen Hurts.

When you consider they had a top-five defense in the NFL last year, lost nobody of note and then drafted two amazing defensive linemen in the first round of the draft as well as bringing in Albert O from the Broncos and

D’Andre Swift from Detroit?

They should be clear favourites.

AFC Winner – Baltimore Ravens

I’ll tell you who was holding Baltimore back – Greg Roman.

They had the most unique offense in football and while it was often hard to stop unless you played seven defensive backs, it had a ceiling.

New Offensive Coordinator Todd Monken is a fresh name in the building and coming from collegiate powerhouse Georgia, he can elevate Lamar to Cam Newton levels of brilliance, especially with this receiving corps.

Taking Mark Andrews as read, Lamar can now throw the rock to Odell Beckham, Nelson Agholor, Rashod Bateman, and perhaps most importantly, Zay Flowers, who is the gadget piece they needed to make that zone read game even more effective.

If Kyle Hamilton fits their scheme, he’s an immediate impact player on defense too.

They’re a strong option in a loaded AFC and a Super Bowl dark horse if the Eagles don’t do it.

NFC South Winner – Carolina Panthers

Yes, it’s a dumpster fire of a division and that alone should make you want to avoid the favourite.

The Saints have brought in Derek Carr which should, in theory, represent an upgrade. But that’s not a guarantee – and the fact Carr doesn’t have a Davante Adams or Darren Waller-type presence to get the ball out to quickly really concerns me.

Most of the damage they do is through clever routes. They’re achieved via Alvin Kamara who’s out for the opening part of the season, as well as Chris Olave who’s naturally very good in the deeper part of the field and Michael Thomas – who’s got no ankles.

Bryce Young could set the world alight to the tune of nine wins and take this division. It’s worth a value play.

Las Vegas Raiders – Under 6.5 Wins

Not only do Vegas have roster turnover and a quarterback deemed nowhere near good enough to complement a team under a genius coordinator, they’ve also got the second-hardest schedule in the NFL this season.

In a division where they play the Chargers, Chiefs and Sean Payton-led Broncos six times, it feels improbable that they’ll win any more than one of those.

So they’re looking for six wins in the remaining eleven games? Not a chance.

Also, replacing Darren Waller’s routes with someone like Jakobi Meyers? Yuck.
